Nice book on causality

Dr. Bunge has written a clear book on the problem of causality and - even if it isn't mentioned in the title - determinism. He shows that causality, determinism, and science are closely related to each other. The book is a fairly easy read for people who are genuinely interested in these issues. However, what I found most disappointing about the book was that Dr. Bunge shows on almost every other page that pure causality and determinism are almost never found in our empirical reality. Pure causality is "merely" an approximation of empirical causality. This conclusion reinforces the feelings of many philosophers that philosophy of science and science itself are two separate disciplines that often seem utterly disconnected.

Nevertheless, if you want to read a good book on a difficult subject as causality and determinism, this is it!

As I write this review, the book is out of print. I definitely hope that it will be available again to the many readers interested in matters concerning causality and the natural sciences.

An excellent overview of determination and causality as one form of determination

Mario Augusto Bunge is one of the outstanding philosophers of science of the last 50 years. His work brings formal logical, mathematical, and semantic rigor together with deep empirical knowledge of various scientific fields, including physics, psychology, and the social sciences. His ontology of emergent materialism is applied consistently to these fields and constitutes the "synthesis" from which much future work will take off and refer to. This third edition contains an appendix that replies to criticisms and questions raised by the first edition.

About the Author

Morgan McGuire is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Williams College, where he teaches computer graphics and games. He is also a games industry consultant with credits including Titan Quest (2006), ROBLOX (2005), Zen of Sudoku (2007), and a yet-unannounced Activision title. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from Brown University.

Odest Chadwicke Jenkins is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. In 2007, Jenkins received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and Young Investigator funding from the Office of Naval Research. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Southern California.

Great game design reference

This book was a surprise because by chance I discovered it while browsing for game design titles.I currently use it as a reference at work (doing game desgn) and look through it quite often.

I really like it touches a lot of subjects and that it also has design exercises throughout the book. The writing style may be a bit terse, but I had no problem with that - it makes the text read more like a text book (compared with, for example "The Art of Game Design: A book of lenses" or "A theory of fun in game design".

"Chris, wear the teal shirt."

Standing in the dressing room of his Upper West Side apartment, Chris had just begun thinking about what he might put on for the party when Robyn called to him from the bathroom, like she'd read his mind. It was one part of being in a couple that still took some getting used to--having someone who knew what he was thinking sometimes even before he did. Chris never would have admitted as much, but at one time, he'd wondered whether Riley--one of his best friend's wife--was his soulmate, if there was even such a thing. Not in a romantic way, at least he didn't think it was romantic, but she just seemed to 'get' him in a way no one else ever had before.

That was before Robyn. Robyn, who one night had inexplicably turned over next to him in bed and awakening from a deep sleep, put a warm hand on his forehead just as he felt the onset of a migraine. Robyn, who could quiet his anxiety with a light touch on his knee; and make him smile with her incessant babbling even though the sound of mindless chatter was something he abhorred more than just about anything.

"I don't even know what teal is," he said to himself.

"That's the one that looks like a mix of light blue and light green!" Robyn called as though she'd heard him.

She was in the bathroom putting on make-up and doing something with her hair that looked complicated. Whatever magic it was she worked, she always looked beautiful when they went out; a different kind of otherworldly beauty than she had everyday just walking around the house in sweats and a t-shirt. When Robyn dressed up, it felt like his secret was out.

"Did you hear me, Chris? It's the blue-green one."

Chris turned toward the closet door. Robyn was standing there in a white maxi-dress with a halter. Instead of strings at the neck, it was held up by a link of small bamboo hoops. And somehow, Robyn had managed to fashion her hair into an asymmetrical Mohawk-type 'do that made her appear a full three inches taller. Her make-up was scarce, except for pale pink lips and eyeliner. Damn, she looked good.

Something about the way he was staring must have given him away, because Robyn's eyes dropped for a second and she tucked her chin in, blushing before she was able to meet his gaze again.


"Did you hear me?" she said again, softer this time. "The blue-gre..."

"Yeah, I heard you."

Taking her hand, Chris pulled her deeper into the closet and against his chest. He pressed his nose against her neck, inhaling a scent that he didn't recognize, but which reminded him of the beach.

"Well, are you going to wear it?" she asked, sounding a little breathy.

Chris smiled against her neck. He loved it that she was just as affected by his touch as he was by hers."I dunno." Reaching up to her nape, he fidgeted with the clasp until it came undone.


"Christopher," Robyn said, gently chiding.

"It's only nine-thirty," he pointed out. "We can be a little late. Nothing's jumpin' off till eleven anyway."

The dress fell to her waist, glanced across her hips and then puddled at her stilettoed feet. As underwear went, all she had on was a wisp of lacy fabric that barely covered her mons.

"No bra?"


Robyn shrugged. "No need."

"These need some coverage," Chris said, cupping them in his hands. As soon as he touched her and her nipples hardened, the twitch in his boxer briefs became a tug.

"Are you saying they're sagging?" she asked, leaning slightly into his palms.

"I'm saying I don't want anyone looking at you and even knowing you have them."

Emotional Rollercoaster

My God, the ride I was taken on for this one was thrilling. Nothing was predictable, nothing felt contrived, it was seriously just beautiful, as always. There were so many emotional moments in this book. I was sad, confused, enraged, hurt, sad again, and sometimes just really, really happy. It's hard to say too much without spoiling the reading experience, but I do have to mention that I just love Robyn's mom. There was a moment where she and Robyn were having a conversation, and I just wanted to step in and shake Robyn and say "HEY! ARE YOU LISTENING?! LISTEN TO YOUR MAMA GIRL!" but then Robyn goes and does something stupid anyway, and it leads to tragedies, and I just... ugh. I spent most of the book not very happy with Robyn at all, even though I "get" her. I felt like she was doing a really great job of making things so much harder than they needed to be, but none of us are perfect, so I guess I can't be TOO mad at her.

If possible, I fell even more in love with Chris. Seeing him grow into his role as a father was really, really heartwarming! Those other two baby mommas though.... *rolls eyes* Scandalous a** women that SEE a guy trying to do better and can't just leave him the hell alone to DO BETTER! Even when they benefit from it! I'm really glad that Chris retained his integrity throughout, even when it seemed like everything was kind of working against him. There was one point where I actually cried for him and what he was feeling. SO many times, I found myself thinking, man, there is no way they can go back from this, but you'll have to read for yourself to find out if they do or not. :)

Anyway, as always, I would highly recommend Afterburn, and anything else by Nia. Afterburn works well enough as a standalone, but I would definitely suggest reading Afterwards first, to get the history of Chris and Robyn's relationship.

Fearless, Unapologetic Talent.

I remember a time when I would pick up a book and could just read without immediately thinking "this is indie" or "who is the publisher?"… but now it stands out in just about everything I put my hands on. Quite often, many independent writers assume the role of wild child in the lit world. A place where the possibilities are endless with discipline being defined by the holder of the pen and not what's been decided in a contract. Or the extreme where rules are simply taboo. Then there are some traditionally published authors choosing to exist within the structured course set before them. Occasionally the traditional authors venture over to the other side with their self-published work, seeking a place that will allow their imaginations room to run wild and free… where their editors cannot turn their nose up or frown. And it's divided the story on the page.

Nia Forrester amazes me as a writer. As a fan of her work, I have watched a damn good writer become extraordinary. A few months ago, I declared Afterwards to be her best. That was until I read Afterburn. Afterburn left me speechless and content. It's been a long time since a book has been able to do both. I'm positive that I am not the only one feeling this way after reading this novel.

What Nia Forrester also accomplished with Afterburn was that she didn't give in to the trap authors fall into, writing a story for the reader. She made a conscious decision to tell the story. I don't think that resonated, so please let me repeat that one more time. Nia Forrester did not let ego, pleas or reader expectations guide this story's path. She did the one thing that defines what a real author is - Nia Forrester told the story.

Why is this such a big feat? Afterwards was a great love story. She took us further into the lives of Chris Scaife and Robyn Crandell and let us watch them fall for each other. Afterburn was bold enough to show the rest of that story, the real afterwards… the tests and defining moments that don't just make couples, but showcase character. Nia Forrester was not afraid to go to some very unexpected places, moments that bring out every emotion a reader probably hasn't experienced in quite some time. In Afterburn, she went there and did one heck of a job.

And that whole indie vs. traditional thing I mentioned did not occur one single time while reading Afterburn. Nia Forrester delivered a complete novel full of all the ingredients that bring out great fiction. This is what I look for when I pull out one of my classic novels, but Nia took it to present day. I didn't feel one ounce of immaturity in the author's voice (now a few of the characters… that's a different story). I didn't sense her wavering or doubt. Not once did she look over her shoulder to see what the reader could be thinking or if we could keep up. And when the heat became intense, Nia did not write drama - she authored life.

Nia Forrester is an author that the indie world must be proud of and traditional publishers should nod their appreciation. Afterburn took down the barrier between the two worlds of creative license and politics to remind the reader of what great fiction is made of. Fearless, unapologetic talent.

5 stars for the writing.....but

I just finished reading Afterburn, and maybe I should have waited to absorb the story more before writing a review but.... I am the spoiler here with my 3 stars. Nia Forrester is an excellent author. Her writing is fluid and compelling and you just want to keep reading. Her books, though, has this underlying theme of cheating. I hate it. Relationships never heal from cheating! You can forgive and move on, but always with a crack. And in this story they both put themselves in precarious situations, that were unforgivable. I guess my major disappointment was in the heroine Robyn. I loved and enjoyed Afterwards where we met and loved and rooted for Robyn. This book.....not so much. It seems as if after securing the love of this mega rich, confirmed bachelor, that Robyn felt she had arrived. She was totally selfish in everything she did. She confessed to loving him soooo much, yet she took his love for granted and expected him to forgive her and support every decision she made, even the ones that put her in danger, undermined their relationship, threatened the safety and security of her child. She wanted a child so bad, was so elated to have this child, but it seemed as if she barely spent anytime with the baby. She was off capturing her wild side. How utterly selfish! She had no thought for her child or her man when she went recklessly putting her life in danger. I know it wasn't going to be possible, but I was hoping she died in the accident. Cruel....I know. But I was looking for that Robyn in Afterwards. Not this character who could have starred in her own reality TV about wives of music moguls, with all her drama. The epilogue, instead of redeeming her, only reinforced her selfishness. The other characters in the story (except for the H and h) were ALL likable, even the ones that were portrayed as evil. The mother was the best. As I said, the writing was very good, even the storyline (5 stars).......the hero and especially the heroine...annoying, disappointing, sad. (1 star)

A Must Read!!

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

It's hard for me to review what a touching piece of work this book was. It was touching and emotional. I just can not imagine what Justin was going through. There were several poems he wrote that just touched me. He certainly has a way of making you see with his words what he was going through. Keep in mind while reading this that the author wasn't just writing about someone else's life, it was his own. That makes these poems that much more special and heartfelt. The stories you will read, the meanings behind them, they can't be replaced ... you can't just replace the person you are losing to the battle they are fighting. Read this book, its more than worth it.

Passion + Energy = Inspiration!

I don't typically enjoy rhyming poetry, but the passion and energy conveyed through Mr. Izlar's poetry is palpable. The additional insights and commentary provided by Mr. James only strengthen and augment an already incredible story. As a fellow author, I am certainly someone who believes in the power of words. I am certain anyone who has faced cancer or who has faced it alongside a loved one will find this book inspiring.

An excellent, unconventional look at the culture of the American South

For all its great hospitality and unique literature and music, the American South has often been seen as having a much darker side in the form of higher levels of violence than found elsewhere in the country or in other developed nations.

In "Culture of Honor: The Psychology of Violence in the South", Richard Nisbett and Dov Cohen closely examine violence in the American South and show the extra violence in the South to lie in the culture of honour inherited from the original settlers of the South, who were herders from the mountainous regions of Scotland and northern Ireland. The culture of honour, in which people are expected to carry out revenge if their honour or ability to defend themselves is insulted, arises as a result of resources being easily stolen, so that in the absence of big government theft becomes a viable route to bounty. Such conditions are fulfilled by herders who are always in danger of losing their extremely portable animals to another herder. Nisbett and Cohen show that herding peoples have always been much more violent than farmers or hunter/gatherers.

Nisbett and Cohen use very well-selected data to show how the difference in violence between the South and the rest of the United States relates to violence committed as a result of arguments, which are seen as threats to the power of not only men but also women in the South. Many other uses of violence are supported no more or even less in the South than in other parts of the United States (for example violence as a means of achieving social change). They also refute arguments that income inequality or slavery is responsible for the violence in the South by showing its concentration in the mountain areas where slavery was very rare due to the cooler climate.

The book also gives a very good explanation for a number of important facts about honour cultures unrelated to herding or the American South. For example, they show that honour cultures can arise for the same reasons in slash-and-burn farming cultures (see Peggy Reeves Sanday for a description of the Yanomamo) and in certain urban societies. (An undiscussed case that I am curious about is forestry-based societies, where the portability of timber might easily produce honour cultures). Nisbett and Cohen also show how non-portability of resources precludes honour cultures in settled farming societies and among primitive foragers. They also take an extremely thoughtful look at the persistence of honour cultures even after the South has become totally divorced from a herding economy.

All in all, "Culture of Honor: The Psychology of Violence in the South" gives a good look at the American South with some surprising conclusions that few even among those with a good historical education understand.

Loved it, even though I beg to differ about the cause

We all know or have known Southerners that respond differently to insults than more cultured Northerners. I love the fact that the author (I've read other works of his and been very impressed) also noticed, and then scientifically demonstrated that physiological differences could be evoked and measured under test conditions that could be duplicated. His use of double-blind methodology and attention to detail leave the results safe to the scrutiny and interpretation by others. He then takes David Hackett Fischer's explanation - Albion's Seed is the probable source, although he may have picked it up from one of his colleagues because it does make perfect sense. But Fischer, who attributed it to a herding culture and competition for resources, was writing about settlers that arrived before the American Revolution. Why has it persisted? The economic base of Southern society has changed so much since the days of a herding culture, I don't believe that particular economic explanation will suffice into the 21st century, attractive as it might be to a Marxist. Socially, it makes perfect sense. Wander through the halls of any high school and you'll be reminded just how class based America still is. Nob Hill v. Trailer Park. Cliques. Jocks, Druggies, Nerds, need I go on? This breaks down as we head off to college and the Big City, but what of the culture most academics have escaped. With close social connections, a man builds a reputation that determines his place in the local hierarchy. He will defend his "Name" as if his economic opportunities and his place in the community depend upon it. Because they do, and everyone is constantly watching and voting on the others. Nisbett points out that Southern women despise a man that won't stand up for himself, for women and children. That's not a throw away line, and goes far in explaining the strong socializing pressure that evokes a physiological response centuries after the herding culture has been abandoned. A man's Name is as much a resource as the herds of old. Boys are aware the girls are watching. Nurture counts. Richard is still one of my favorite authors.

CULTURE OF HONOR

Frankly, although the title implies this is a book for the reader interested in history and sociology, it is really a book with academic tone, one that might serve for a masters or Phd thesis. It just doesn't flow like a good trade book by James McPherson (a wonderful historian on the Civil War) or Richard Dawkins (an expert on the sciences of biology and evolution) or Oliver Sacks (an expert on psychology and neurology.) These writers-- even one on the history of men in combat-- consider their audience. So apparently did the author of this book, and it appears the audience is not the reader of trade books. Simply put. I do not fault either the writer or the book. It just isn't what I thought it would be.

Stress-free Cookbook!

When I was learning to cook I had to learn to cook for a family of five. Those days of cooking for a larger than two people at a time have reduced to a few times throughout the year and holidays so it was nice to learn how to cook smaller and healthier meals at home. As I have gotten older, I try to prepare meals for my husband and I that are healthier so that we can live happy and healthy long lives.
This healthy cookbook for two provides 175 simple and nutritious recipes to prepare a meal for two at home. However, this book does show you how to double the recipes if you need to. For example, should you have company come over or you want leftovers. However, it says not to double baking, just make double batches otherwise it will not turn out right.
This book goes into the ten different cooking techniques and gives detailed description so even a beginner can utilize this book.
One thing I learned was preparing make ahead meals. These are meals are planned out and less stressful. It also gives a list of certain items and tells how long they can be kept in the fridge before they expire.
This book states that the Department of Agriculture and US Food and Drug Administration compile a list of pesticides found in commercial crops and lists which ones to buy organically and which ones are safe to eat commercially. Also referred as the Dirty Dozen, ones to avoid; and the Clean 15, those safe to eat.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for healthier recipes whether it be for dieting or simply planning out smaller meals for stress free living. I got this book to review however, all thoughts, ideas and words are indeed my own.

This book has changed my life!

Most of the time I am only cooking for two, my daughter and I. My husband works most nights so it's just the two of us. I am so happy this book came into my life. I received this book for free in exchange of my honest and unbiased review. I am so happy I did! It's really hard sometimes cooking for two. It's especially hard to cook healthy for two people.

This book has so many great recipes in it. They are all made with fresh and whole foods. It also helps you come up with a meal plan for the week. It will give you a ton of tricks in order to save time and how to cook the right way. It teaches you how to prepare a head of cooking in order to save time.

The major thing is planning ahead. Not only will it help you get healthy meals for two but it will also save you money. You won't be wasting food. Planning ahead will also help you stay home instead of eating out.

I am horrible at planning my grocery list. With this book I have saved so much money already. I have been making very healthy meals and not spending as much. I am also not spending as much time in the kitchen. I am using certain ingredients in many different dishes. I love it.

This book has changed my whole kitchen. I am now cooking healthy and spending less doing it. I am happy knowing that my daughter and I are eating healthy almost all week long.

If you cook for two you need this book. It will save you time and money! It's as easy as that.

Best Healthy Cookbook for two

This book is a great book for people who have busy lives and are used to cooking for a lot of people. The recipes are very accurate and easy to make. These recipes include Gluten and dairy free options.
The recipes within this book show you important nutritional facts such as calories, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, and more.
There are suggestions within the book that suggest what to pair your main dish with such as a dessert. All you need to do is click on the suggestion and it takes you right to the healthy recipe for the suggested foods.
The recipes are very well writien and explained very well and they are easy to make meals for two, which would be easy to then intergrate into bigger meals if needed. So even though it is a cookbook for 2, there are simple ways to incorporate for a night with guests.
