"Chris, wear the teal shirt."
Standing in the dressing room of his Upper West Side apartment, Chris had just begun thinking about what he might put on for the party when Robyn called to him from the bathroom, like she'd read his mind. It was one part of being in a couple that still took some getting used to--having someone who knew what he was thinking sometimes even before he did. Chris never would have admitted as much, but at one time, he'd wondered whether Riley--one of his best friend's wife--was his soulmate, if there was even such a thing. Not in a romantic way, at least he didn't think it was romantic, but she just seemed to 'get' him in a way no one else ever had before.
That was before Robyn. Robyn, who one night had inexplicably turned over next to him in bed and awakening from a deep sleep, put a warm hand on his forehead just as he felt the onset of a migraine. Robyn, who could quiet his anxiety with a light touch on his knee; and make him smile with her incessant babbling even though the sound of mindless chatter was something he abhorred more than just about anything.
"I don't even know what teal is," he said to himself.
"That's the one that looks like a mix of light blue and light green!" Robyn called as though she'd heard him.
She was in the bathroom putting on make-up and doing something with her hair that looked complicated. Whatever magic it was she worked, she always looked beautiful when they went out; a different kind of otherworldly beauty than she had everyday just walking around the house in sweats and a t-shirt. When Robyn dressed up, it felt like his secret was out.
"Did you hear me, Chris? It's the blue-green one."
Chris turned toward the closet door. Robyn was standing there in a white maxi-dress with a halter. Instead of strings at the neck, it was held up by a link of small bamboo hoops. And somehow, Robyn had managed to fashion her hair into an asymmetrical Mohawk-type 'do that made her appear a full three inches taller. Her make-up was scarce, except for pale pink lips and eyeliner. Damn, she looked good.
Something about the way he was staring must have given him away, because Robyn's eyes dropped for a second and she tucked her chin in, blushing before she was able to meet his gaze again.
"Did you hear me?" she said again, softer this time. "The blue-gre..."
"Yeah, I heard you."
Taking her hand, Chris pulled her deeper into the closet and against his chest. He pressed his nose against her neck, inhaling a scent that he didn't recognize, but which reminded him of the beach.
"Well, are you going to wear it?" she asked, sounding a little breathy.
Chris smiled against her neck. He loved it that she was just as affected by his touch as he was by hers."I dunno." Reaching up to her nape, he fidgeted with the clasp until it came undone.
"Christopher," Robyn said, gently chiding.
"It's only nine-thirty," he pointed out. "We can be a little late. Nothing's jumpin' off till eleven anyway."
The dress fell to her waist, glanced across her hips and then puddled at her stilettoed feet. As underwear went, all she had on was a wisp of lacy fabric that barely covered her mons.
"No bra?"
Robyn shrugged. "No need."
"These need some coverage," Chris said, cupping them in his hands. As soon as he touched her and her nipples hardened, the twitch in his boxer briefs became a tug.
"Are you saying they're sagging?" she asked, leaning slightly into his palms.
"I'm saying I don't want anyone looking at you and even knowing you have them."

Emotional Rollercoaster

My God, the ride I was taken on for this one was thrilling. Nothing was predictable, nothing felt contrived, it was seriously just beautiful, as always. There were so many emotional moments in this book. I was sad, confused, enraged, hurt, sad again, and sometimes just really, really happy. It's hard to say too much without spoiling the reading experience, but I do have to mention that I just love Robyn's mom. There was a moment where she and Robyn were having a conversation, and I just wanted to step in and shake Robyn and say "HEY! ARE YOU LISTENING?! LISTEN TO YOUR MAMA GIRL!" but then Robyn goes and does something stupid anyway, and it leads to tragedies, and I just... ugh. I spent most of the book not very happy with Robyn at all, even though I "get" her. I felt like she was doing a really great job of making things so much harder than they needed to be, but none of us are perfect, so I guess I can't be TOO mad at her.
If possible, I fell even more in love with Chris. Seeing him grow into his role as a father was really, really heartwarming! Those other two baby mommas though.... *rolls eyes* Scandalous a** women that SEE a guy trying to do better and can't just leave him the hell alone to DO BETTER! Even when they benefit from it! I'm really glad that Chris retained his integrity throughout, even when it seemed like everything was kind of working against him. There was one point where I actually cried for him and what he was feeling. SO many times, I found myself thinking, man, there is no way they can go back from this, but you'll have to read for yourself to find out if they do or not. :)
Anyway, as always, I would highly recommend Afterburn, and anything else by Nia. Afterburn works well enough as a standalone, but I would definitely suggest reading Afterwards first, to get the history of Chris and Robyn's relationship.

Fearless, Unapologetic Talent.

I remember a time when I would pick up a book and could just read without immediately thinking "this is indie" or "who is the publisher?"… but now it stands out in just about everything I put my hands on. Quite often, many independent writers assume the role of wild child in the lit world. A place where the possibilities are endless with discipline being defined by the holder of the pen and not what's been decided in a contract. Or the extreme where rules are simply taboo. Then there are some traditionally published authors choosing to exist within the structured course set before them. Occasionally the traditional authors venture over to the other side with their self-published work, seeking a place that will allow their imaginations room to run wild and free… where their editors cannot turn their nose up or frown. And it's divided the story on the page.
Nia Forrester amazes me as a writer. As a fan of her work, I have watched a damn good writer become extraordinary. A few months ago, I declared Afterwards to be her best. That was until I read Afterburn. Afterburn left me speechless and content. It's been a long time since a book has been able to do both. I'm positive that I am not the only one feeling this way after reading this novel.
What Nia Forrester also accomplished with Afterburn was that she didn't give in to the trap authors fall into, writing a story for the reader. She made a conscious decision to tell the story. I don't think that resonated, so please let me repeat that one more time. Nia Forrester did not let ego, pleas or reader expectations guide this story's path. She did the one thing that defines what a real author is - Nia Forrester told the story.
Why is this such a big feat? Afterwards was a great love story. She took us further into the lives of Chris Scaife and Robyn Crandell and let us watch them fall for each other. Afterburn was bold enough to show the rest of that story, the real afterwards… the tests and defining moments that don't just make couples, but showcase character. Nia Forrester was not afraid to go to some very unexpected places, moments that bring out every emotion a reader probably hasn't experienced in quite some time. In Afterburn, she went there and did one heck of a job.
And that whole indie vs. traditional thing I mentioned did not occur one single time while reading Afterburn. Nia Forrester delivered a complete novel full of all the ingredients that bring out great fiction. This is what I look for when I pull out one of my classic novels, but Nia took it to present day. I didn't feel one ounce of immaturity in the author's voice (now a few of the characters… that's a different story). I didn't sense her wavering or doubt. Not once did she look over her shoulder to see what the reader could be thinking or if we could keep up. And when the heat became intense, Nia did not write drama - she authored life.
Nia Forrester is an author that the indie world must be proud of and traditional publishers should nod their appreciation. Afterburn took down the barrier between the two worlds of creative license and politics to remind the reader of what great fiction is made of. Fearless, unapologetic talent.

5 stars for the writing.....but

I just finished reading Afterburn, and maybe I should have waited to absorb the story more before writing a review but.... I am the spoiler here with my 3 stars. Nia Forrester is an excellent author. Her writing is fluid and compelling and you just want to keep reading. Her books, though, has this underlying theme of cheating. I hate it. Relationships never heal from cheating! You can forgive and move on, but always with a crack. And in this story they both put themselves in precarious situations, that were unforgivable. I guess my major disappointment was in the heroine Robyn. I loved and enjoyed Afterwards where we met and loved and rooted for Robyn. This book.....not so much. It seems as if after securing the love of this mega rich, confirmed bachelor, that Robyn felt she had arrived. She was totally selfish in everything she did. She confessed to loving him soooo much, yet she took his love for granted and expected him to forgive her and support every decision she made, even the ones that put her in danger, undermined their relationship, threatened the safety and security of her child. She wanted a child so bad, was so elated to have this child, but it seemed as if she barely spent anytime with the baby. She was off capturing her wild side. How utterly selfish! She had no thought for her child or her man when she went recklessly putting her life in danger. I know it wasn't going to be possible, but I was hoping she died in the accident. Cruel....I know. But I was looking for that Robyn in Afterwards. Not this character who could have starred in her own reality TV about wives of music moguls, with all her drama. The epilogue, instead of redeeming her, only reinforced her selfishness. The other characters in the story (except for the H and h) were ALL likable, even the ones that were portrayed as evil. The mother was the best. As I said, the writing was very good, even the storyline (5 stars).......the hero and especially the heroine...annoying, disappointing, sad. (1 star)
