Good Comic Series

I enjoyed this comic series. The only reason it does not have 5 stars is because navigating the ebook version is difficult. When you change a page you can click on the first panel and it enlarges, then you swipe till the end of the panels on that page. But you have to manually exit out of the panel, swipe to the next page, and the open the first panel again. The storyline is easy to follow with a few plot holes that fill in as you go along, and like the first volume, it ends on a cliff hanger.

An impressive continuation of amazing story.

"During the war I thought surviving would be enough. But surviving is the easy part."

After escaping from the house of the Cumaean, Maika travels through Zamora to get to the other side of the wall, to meet her friend Tuya on the Arcanic lands. But Maika doesn't know that she's followed by the people who want the piece of the mask she stole and she still doesn't fully grasp what's happening to her, when a strange hunger overcomes her. Determined to find out the secrets connected to her mother and the mask, she won't stop before she finds the truth.

With issue 2 of Monstress we're picking up the story where issue 1 ended and once again, I was drawn in to the fascinating, cruel world created by Marjorie Liu. A few new characters are introduced and we learn a bit more about the world of Zamora and Maika. I'm reallu curious to pick up the next issues and find out more about her secret transformations and the mythology behind the world - especially the mysterious ghosts.

The artwork was once again outstanding. The amount of details and the effort it must have taken to create such stunning illustrations is incredible. In this issue there was quite a few scenes during the night and I absolutely loved how they were portrayed, with brilliants colours and art. There was quite a lot of violence in here but I like how the action scenes were drawn.

At the end the comic has some helpful and fun additional material, which includes little "history lesson" about the world created in the story, fan letters and photos, excerpts from the script of this issue, as well as the sneak peek from issue 3. I thought they all made a nice addition, giving us a little view "behind the scenes".

I can't wait to pick up issue 3 and see where it's going to take us :)

Love the story progression

Another wonderful issue with more beautiful art. In this issue, Maika awakes to find herself traveling and still full of questions. This issue was about half the length of the first so there was not a lot of plot movement but we do end on a cliff-hanger as Maika encounters a woman hunting her. This again was another mysterious issue, more question about who or what Maika actually is.

I love the detail again in this issues images - there are less settings and more people that are showcased but their clothing and motions are just as elaborately done as the settings in the last installment. I am really loving this series so far.

I don't want to say too much more at this point because I don't want to spoil any more of the story for those of you who want to read it, but even though there are a lot of questions I have about this character and the plot I think it is well worth reading for the images alone. So wonderful.

Just Paint It! takes a refreshing look at starting to paint - it encourages you simply to have fun. Don't worry about the details, just get on with it. The more you do the better you get. The purpose of the book is to reignite the passion for painting most of us felt in our childhood, and to break down all the inhibitions that have developed since. There are chapters on tools and materials, form and tone, colour, composition and space, pattern and texture and, finally, observation, exploration and imagination. There's a good contemporary design feel to the way the information is presented and you'll be surprised by how much you've learnt while you thought you were just having fun.-The Leisure Painter This is the companion to Just Draw It! that I liked a lot last year. It subtitles itself "The world's most enjoyable painting course. Ever." which is, I think, a tall claim and one it'll only live up to if you like your art a bit, well, funky. As before, there's a lot here and it's all very colourful, creative and varied. Conventional, though, it's not and you'll either find that frustrating or a breath of fresh air. What you see on the cover is entirely typical. The approach and the text are as sound as a bell, however. The explanations of form, light & shade, colour composition, texture, etc are as good as any: concise, clear and amply and relevantly illustrated. It's the style of the llustrations you may stumble over. None of this is a criticism. The book itself is excellent, but it's not going to appeal to everyone (did anything, ever?). If you like it, you'll agree with that subtitle billing. If you don't, I'd still say it's worth a bit of effort, though. You see, I'm warming to it already!-Artbookreview.net

About the Author
Sam Piyasena had his first illustration published in the Sunday Times newspaper, while still at school. He then went on to study at the Chelsea School of Art, followed by Central St. Martins, where he specialised in illustration. After graduating he worked as an illustrator and photographer for various international clients including Nike, Universal Records, and the BBC.He has taught at various art colleges in the UK and conducted international art workshops for The British Council. After completing a BA, specialising in illustration at Brighton University, she went on to study an MA in Communication, Art and Design at the Royal College of Art. The best art book I have read in a very long time

Honestly this is one of the best art books I have read!! It is filled with techniques and new information that gives you a sound art history introduction as well. The exercises complement the reading and I love the boxes of further artists to look up and explore.

I own more than a couple of art books (!!) and many of the mixed media books are the same faces and are the same sort of messages in the books as well. There is none of that in this. It is just an art course in a book. I have been so sparked by inspiration and learning new things as well. Just a perfect book for my own artistic development.

This one was just filled with educational information and techniques to explore with ideas for taking it further as well.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I really want his drawing book now as well. I can only imagine how much that will grow my drawing skills.

Excellent for beginners!

With 14 lessons I was able to cover most of the book in two weeks, spending about 2 hours a day. I found the book easy to follow, and the activities they proposed interesting. I attempted my first solo piece and though it took me about 4 hours, I was able to flip through the book and find the help I needed. I think this book is excellent for beginners...like me!

A Helpful Book that Will Teach You the Basics of CS6

I’m taking a college course on Photoshop CS6. The primary text for this course is this textbook, Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classroom In A Book. This is a self-directed course that has me working independently along with a primary mentor, so there are no other students or formal classes. I was instructed in the learning contract to complete this book along with eight projects and a paper. I ordered this book on Amazon and have been working my way through it one chapter at a time. I’ve finally completed it.

Not having a class to go to or other students to confer with makes this review a good one because it provides an account that is representative of one man’s experience working with the content provided by the team of authors. There are no outside influences to sway my learning abilities. No professor to guide me, no students to correct me, no other resources, just me and this book.

With all that said, I will state that this book is well written. It has been carefully thought out and edited. As a professional writer myself, there are a few things I could polish in terms of the editing, but that’s out of the scope of this review. I’ve learned a lot from this book and walked away from it having a much better understanding of the capabilities of CS6 and the things I can do with the software. It is extremely powerful software that can be an enormous asset to both a layperson and a seasoned professional.

It is not without its faults. There were many times I labored over some of the chapters because the authors make certain assumptions about the knowledge base of the reader. Not all menu options and features are clearly communicated and it can be rather daunting trying to figure out what menu button, feature, option drop down box, or items I need to access and where they’re located. Screen captures aren’t consistently supplied to help guide you through the lessons. A few times menu selections or features were not available at all, which I learned later is because certain plugins had not been installed on my computer (Zoomify, Flash, etc.). On more than one occasion, menu selections were named something a little different, which leads me to believe the book may have been written from an earlier release of CS6. On one occasion a screen selection wasn’t available at all. I was able to work around this by digging into other menu drop downs to locate it elsewhere.

The beginning of each chapter provides a time estimate for the chapter. “This chapter will take less than an hour to complete,” for example. I found these estimates to be very inaccurate. For me, if it said an hour, I’d estimate two hours, minimum. Add the frustrations described above, and this amounted to more time. In my experience, their estimates were not well determined for those inexperienced with the software, carefully trying to work through each lesson.

The book comes with a supplied disk that contains lessons for each chapter. These are extremely helpful and offer excellent opportunities for the user to learn and practice the lessons in the book. Each lesson provides a start and end file. The end file is the completed project. The start file is what you start with. Each chapter instructs you to save and rename this file to a working copy that you use as your sandbox for learning. You follow the chapter to complete the lesson and create exactly what you see in the end file.

This learning paradigm is an excellent platform to ingrain each lesson into the user’s mind and fingers. If you follow it faithfully, you will learn a wealth of features, tips, and tricks about CS6.

A previous reviewer criticized this book by stating it is really just the CS5 book renamed as CS6. I kept this in mind while working through the book. This is incorrect. I found a number of CS6-specific features discussed. I’m sure the publisher started with CS5 as a launching pad to develop, added CS6 features, and then ran it though a number of reviews to vet it for content accuracy.

Adobe Photoshop is an extremely rich and powerful product that can be used to do much more than this book instructs. The intent of this book is to acquaint a user with a broad cross section of its most powerful features. Don’t expect it to teach you everything about the product. It’s designed to get you to a very comfortable starting point from which to learn more.

If it weren’t for the many frustrations I bumped into while working through the various chapters, I’d give this book a solid 4 stars.

Kindle Users can still get tutorial files.

*NOTE* There is a link at the end of the eBook that allows you to download the tutorial files. So, you can in fact get the files and the videos for this book.

That said, great guide. I haven't used Photoshop in a while and this was a great guide both as a refresher and to learn the new features of CS6.
