Just Paint It! takes a refreshing look at starting to paint - it encourages you simply to have fun. Don't worry about the details, just get on with it. The more you do the better you get. The purpose of the book is to reignite the passion for painting most of us felt in our childhood, and to break down all the inhibitions that have developed since. There are chapters on tools and materials, form and tone, colour, composition and space, pattern and texture and, finally, observation, exploration and imagination. There's a good contemporary design feel to the way the information is presented and you'll be surprised by how much you've learnt while you thought you were just having fun.-The Leisure Painter This is the companion to Just Draw It! that I liked a lot last year. It subtitles itself "The world's most enjoyable painting course. Ever." which is, I think, a tall claim and one it'll only live up to if you like your art a bit, well, funky. As before, there's a lot here and it's all very colourful, creative and varied. Conventional, though, it's not and you'll either find that frustrating or a breath of fresh air. What you see on the cover is entirely typical. The approach and the text are as sound as a bell, however. The explanations of form, light & shade, colour composition, texture, etc are as good as any: concise, clear and amply and relevantly illustrated. It's the style of the llustrations you may stumble over. None of this is a criticism. The book itself is excellent, but it's not going to appeal to everyone (did anything, ever?). If you like it, you'll agree with that subtitle billing. If you don't, I'd still say it's worth a bit of effort, though. You see, I'm warming to it already!-Artbookreview.net
About the Author
Sam Piyasena had his first illustration published in the Sunday Times newspaper, while still at school. He then went on to study at the Chelsea School of Art, followed by Central St. Martins, where he specialised in illustration. After graduating he worked as an illustrator and photographer for various international clients including Nike, Universal Records, and the BBC.He has taught at various art colleges in the UK and conducted international art workshops for The British Council. After completing a BA, specialising in illustration at Brighton University, she went on to study an MA in Communication, Art and Design at the Royal College of Art. Her work is based on observational drawing, and she is keen to impart the importance of drawing skills to her students. Simple and easy to follow

Purchased this for a birthday present for a student of mine who shows artistic promise. She loved it - she's new to painting and used what she learned from this book to paint a portrait of my cat!

The best art book I have read in a very long time

Honestly this is one of the best art books I have read!! It is filled with techniques and new information that gives you a sound art history introduction as well. The exercises complement the reading and I love the boxes of further artists to look up and explore.
I own more than a couple of art books (!!) and many of the mixed media books are the same faces and are the same sort of messages in the books as well. There is none of that in this. It is just an art course in a book. I have been so sparked by inspiration and learning new things as well. Just a perfect book for my own artistic development.
This one was just filled with educational information and techniques to explore with ideas for taking it further as well.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I really want his drawing book now as well. I can only imagine how much that will grow my drawing skills.
