About the Author
John Rinaldi, is Chief Strategist, Business Development Manager and CEO of Real Time Automation (RTA) in Brookfield WI. After escaping from Marquette University with a degree in Electrical Engineering (graduating cum laude no less) John worked in various jobs in the Automation Industry before once again fleeing back into the comfortable halls of academia. At the University of Connecticut he once again talked his way into a degree, this time in Computer Science (MS CS). John achieved marginal success as a Control Engineer, a Software Developer and IT Manager before founding Real Time Automation because “long term employment prospects are somewhat bleak for loose cannons”. With a strong desire to avoid work, responsibility and decision making, John had to build a great team at Real Time Automation. And he did. RTA now supplies network converters for industrial and building automation applications all over the world. With a focus on simplicity, US Support, fast service, expert consulting and tailoring for specific customer applications, RTA has become a leading supplier of gateways worldwide. John freely admits that the success of RTA is solely attributed to the incredible staff that like working for an odd, quirky company with a single focus: "Create solutions so simple to use, the hardest part of their integration is opening the box."

ModBus Revealed

Since you are reading this review, it means you are looking for a better understanding of Modbus and wish to know if this book would help in that endeavor. How often do you get to have decades of ModBus experience handed to you? Buy the book.
One can tell it is hands on experience. I can tell John has spent many a day in the field with his breakout analyzers saying, 'so you say this is the packet you are sending, now here is what you are really sending'. Been there, done that. After you read his , you too would be able to do that. Buy the book.
For Industrial Automation personnel, there is a reason ModBus is still around. Nice simple protocol. You will run into it sooner or later, just about anywhere in the world. This bound of paper John wrote will help you immensely. Buy the book.

Great Resource for Industrial & Building Automation Technical People

This book is a great resource for designers, engineers, and technicians in the automation field since Modbus is used throughout the world and understanding how to apply it is important for any person involved in the automation industry. The author describes the Modbus communications protocol in easy to understand terms and this is why I will wrote the forward for this book. Modbus is used in a wide range of applications including industrial automation, process control, building automation, transportation, energy, and remote monitoring. Virtually any type of sensor and controller devices can be found that incorporates Modbus networking including programmable logic controllers (PLC), process controllers, process instruments, process sensors, PID controllers, motor drives, energy meters, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, programmable automation controllers (PAC), discrete sensors, valves, and many other embedded devices.
