This book brings together information possible found elsewhere, but saves a great amount of time looking for the information.

Wonder how to send a HTML Email without creating your own CSS?

Tidbits like this make this book worth it. If you're not using CruiseControl yet, you should definately consider it. Then pair it with CheckStyle!

Good book, but thin and too Java-specific

This is a good book. But I have to say, for $30 I was surprised at how slim it was. There's a lot of good concepts covered, but nearly every implementation relies on a Java-specific tool. I would have loved to have seen the book spend a little more time talking about how to automate some of the tasks in a more language-neutral way. Nevertheless it is a good book, albeit one only genuinely useful to Java programmers.

Hire a Virtual Employee - buy this book!

If you are doing any serious software development, then you have tasks that need to be automated. Your build process, unit tests, deployment, measurements of quality, and other metrics for project management can all be automated once, and then created over and over again, basically 'for free'. This is what computer do, right? So why not let them do it for software development?

Mike Clark does an excellent job describing both the 'high-level why' of project automation, as well as real-world 'low level' examples. He describes project automation with shell scripts, tools like Ant and CruiseControl, automation of routine tasks in CVS, and create automated 'status reports' with things like log4j and RSS feeds of data from your build report.

The day after reading this book, I had modified our automated build to send an email to my cell phone if it failed - along with the names of everyone who had commited a change since the last successful build. While not every project needs this level of paranoia, this kind of 'project safety net' gives us great confidence in the quality of our code.

It's hard to say what could be improved about this book - its biggest strength and its biggest weakness are its size... at 150 pages, I feel like there could have been so much more said on the subject... on the other hand, the books size makes it very approachable - you can pick it up, read it, learn something, and use it that same day. If the book were any larger, it would run the risk of trying to say too much, not saying it as clearly, and dating itself much more quickly.

This book (actually all three of the prag prog 'starter kit' are on our team bookshelf, and are considered part of our project's documentation.

I'm not a huge fan of the author as a professor, and let's just say that based on his normal writing, the editors for this book deserve a medal. All that aside though, the book has plenty of examples and is mostly well-written and understandable (despite the very abstract topic of systems analysis). My one gripe is that I wish the book had more code examples for systems analysis software, the author mentions programming models in various software packages it a lot but only provides the code for perhaps a quarter of the examples.

Write well and prosper with this kick-brain book!

I found ways to sharpen my writing focus on literally every page. A must for any communicator, whether a professional or just a recipe blogger. I read the sample on my Kindle and knew I'd have to order it in hardcover, because I'd be highlighting, underlining and writing in the margins. And, yep, I scribbled notes to myself about how to apply it to my own writing. And scratched out several new ideas about writing fiction on the blank pages at the back. In short, the book delivers. Right up there with Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. I'm adapting the principles in ITI into a book I'm writing about how a fiction writer can hack the hearts and minds of readers of a novel. Plus, I'm using those principles to rewriting my novel in progress. This is one of those rare books that makes you feels as if you'd like to sit down over coffee and let the author feed your brain some more. The photo shows my notes on p. 169. Wow! Just wow!

Densely packed with useful information

It took me awhile to finish this review because I couldn't easily assess its value. The Advance Reading Copy lacks the color illustrations of the final product, so reviewers won't get the book's full flavor.

The intriguing premise of the book is that marketers need to create "prospective memories," i.e., memories that will be recalled when buyers are ready to take action. As I understand the concept:

The customer obtains information at time t. She needs to recall this information at time t+1, t+2 or even t+365 or more, where numbers represent days. So as a marketer, you're creating events that will be retrieved as memories at the future time when the buyer is faced with a decision.

"Prospective memory" sounds a lot more solid, intellectual and worthy of a consulting gig, compared to "getting customers to recall your message in time." But that's what it amounts to.

Most business books tend to be heavy on examples and anecdotes but light on theory and principle. This book was just the opposite. The author's PhD background was obvious. She cites a lot of studies (which I really appreciated). She shows an academic bent, distinguishing similar concepts, such as novelty and surprise, expectation and anticipation. And she didn't repeat the same-old, same-old studies. Much of the information was new.

My biggest quibble is that I'd have liked to see more practical examples of how an ordinary business could apply these principles. I was really struck by the discussion of making a PowerPoint slide stand out. That's an idea I can use immediately: I do tons of PowerPoint videos and webinars. I liked the discussion of context and cues. The section on gist vs verbatim was enlightening.

But then we get a section on "adaptive coherence," very abstract and without an obvious application. The discussion of metaphor moved into a discussion of meaning seamlessly, and I would have liked clear examples. The section on influencing with imagination will be familiar to copywriters but a few more in-depth, relevant examples would have helped.

Impossible to Ignore is densely packed with ideas and concepts. I can't hep wishing the author had focused on fewer ideas, but more in-depth. Reading this book was like racing through a museum, spending only a few seconds on each object, the way bad tour guides operate. Ironically, given the title of the book, it was hard to remember and appreciate the various concepts and ideas individually. I'm not optimistic about the creation of prospective memories!

Like eating pickles slathered in peanut butter

Dr. Simon: I am enjoying consuming your book Impossible to Ignore--it's like eating pickles slathered in peanut butter. Over the course of my career I've intuitively relied on several principles for graphic design which align with some of your fifteen variables: creating surprise, inviting viewer participation, and juxtaposition of familiar yet seemingly unrelated concepts/objects. How exciting is this for me to stumble onto your framework for understanding how it all works. This will help me evaluate my work with an even broader set of objective criteria. I'm going to do a retrospective audit to see if I can get up the recommended 8 or 9--including my dead files!

Readers: After much deliberation, I purchased the Kindle electronic book format. I love the tactile feel and ability to keep a physical copy of favored "reference" books on a bookshelf. However, when I'm into the learning phase with a new work, I tend to lug it with me everywhere I go which can get tedious and burdensome. This book lends itself well to the electronic format--the illustrations are good and you can isolate and zoom in on them. The content isn't reliant on a graphic page layout to make it's point. It is also nicely "page flip" enabled, making it easy to navigate/skim around, do side research, and get back to where you left off--all with much fewer clicks than before. Now, I can take this book everywhere I go.

I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits

Flawlessly well-written, as one would expect, I found this book simple to follow, brimming with clear examples and solid on grammar/spelling/punctuation usage. I will be dipping into it much as I write and edit and have already implemented a style guide based on its template. There are many suggested ways of copy-editing, proofreading — you get to test-drive which methods suits you — with little pieces from experienced editors on how they approach their work. I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits, from indie authors such as me to bloggers. This book is very practical and gets you up to speed fast.

I had to take a proofreading test for a job interview, so I thought this book might help me brush up on my proofreading skills. I didn't really like the general information, I found the advice to be very obvious and I feel like you could get that information for free on the internet. However, I did find the exercises to be somewhat helpful. Dedicating an entire exercise to "there, their, and they're" may not have been that constructive, but some of the other exercises did help me pay greater attention to detail for the test.

Jo Malone is one of the most successful scent entrepreneurs of modern time. Her story is a how to for anyone with an idea and the passion to develop it.
I was an early customer of Jo Malone London and loved the way her beautiful scents made me feel and smell. But in the early millennium, her products seemed to change and not for the better. When I returned a bottle of perfume the sales person told me she had sold her company to a conglomerate. That was the last time I bought a Jo Malone product. They had been changed somehow and were no longer the elegant scents I had fallen in love with. When I heard that she had started another company that would be hers alone, I couldn't wait to try her products.
This is a resilient woman with a passion and there is no doubt in my mind she will enjoy another "second act" making beautiful scents.
Her story is fascinating. She is someone in whose success the reader rejoices.

A warmly written bio that feels as though Jo is chatting over a cup of tea. She shares stories of her childhood, family struggles, health challenges and overcoming dyslexia by embracing her heightened sense of smell to create one of the most beloved brands in the fragrance world.

A lovely and enjoyable read that is part memoir, part self help and part how to succeed in business.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves fragrance and a heart warming story of success through hard work and love.

This book was just ok. I didn't find it particularly inspiring or insightful. The final thoughts don't really disguise the author's true intention, either, which is to use this book as a launching pad for taking her latest brand international. For such a long biography, I was really hoping for more.
