About the Author
Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn’t do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Rick Osborne's The Legend Of The Christmas Tree: The Inspirational Story Of A Treasured Tradition is a delightful kids' book, for which every page spread has charming text on the left and a full-color, realistically painted illustration by Bill dodge of a family celebrating the joy of Christmas on the right. The story is about the legend behind the tradition of searching for a Christmas tree, which dates back to the Reformation: when Martin Luther brought a tree into his house, he set candles on it to celebrate Jesus, the Light of the World. The Legend Of The Christmas Tree is in many ways about the need to make Jesus Christ a larger part of Christmas. Since the Biblical foundations of Christmas are often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of rampant consumerism that marks the season, The Legend Of The Christmas Tree is a very good introduction for young Christian readers to the holiday's origin. Also very highly recommended are the other fine books in this educational series: The Legend Of The Candy Cane (0310212472, $14.99), The Legend Of The Easter Egg (0310224470, $14.99), and The Legend Of The Valentine (0310700396, $14.99).

Good Choice for Classroom Reading Guest

I purchased this book for two reasons. It brings to light the true meaning of Christmas...Jesus and sharing love. This story provides another format to talk about the birth of Christ to your children aside from the traditional manger story. There's a light introduction to the biblical significance of Christmas, in addition to the treasure of family unity. I found that this book helps reinforce the values which I am trying to emphasize in my own family, while also cherrishing old time family traditions. In case you were concerned, I don't think it dilutes the truth of the bible...Also, as a mother of two young elementary school-aged children, I also have the opportunity to be a guest reader in the classroom. It is totally appropriate reading for public schools, even though there is biblical reference. This book offers a refreshing change from the fantasy holiday stories and commercialization of Christmas. It will be a special story to your family and it will set a warm-hearted atmosphere to your tree-decorating festivities.

Great Book for a Christian Christmas

We had the board book version of the Legend of the Christmas Tree. I really appreciated how it presented from a Christian perspective why we use Christmas trees. I knew that the large version of the book would have more information than the board book. It did. The plan is to use this with our children each year after we put up our tree to remind us why we have a tree and how it reflects Christ.

Professor Raybeck writes for students

I think the highlight of this book is that Professor Raybeck writes in a way that introduces anthropology to students as approachable and interesting. It shows the mistakes that a professonal can (and will) make while in the field. While taking Professor Raybeck's class at Hamilton College, "Mad Dogs" was used as a tool and example in his own teaching, but I feel that this book stands alone and can be used for any intro to anthro class, or for anyone looking for a low-key introduction to anthropological field work.

Great Introduction.... AND funny

The author is a former professor of mine. I would definitely recommend this book as an introductory resource - if you are going to do any kind of fieldwork anywhere (not just Malaysia), read this book! It's not very long and written in plain, easy-to-understand language, yet covers all the areas you should be thinking about before heading off to conquer the world.
Yes, the book is informative, easily readable, BUT, above all, it is funny!! Doug Raybeck is a great writer and if you're at all interested in Anthropology, other cultures, academic research, fieldwork, or are just a geek, who likes to read about other people's pitfalls, BUY THIS BOOK!

I assigned this in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology class

A colleague recommended this book as an introduction to the basics of anthropological fieldwork for undergraduates. Raybeck did a fantastic job of painting a realistic, honest picture of what the fieldwork experience looks like; although ethnographic fieldwork obviously differs for each anthropologist, the invariable common element is that "things go awry." Raybeck shows the readers how he managed to learn from these unexpected experiences, and how building rapport and becoming part of a community necessarily involves the sorts of decisions that can't possibly be planned in advance. It's not a traditional ethnographic text, so you won't find much theory or even a lot of descriptive data to mine. Describing Kelantan and its residents is not Raybeck's primary purpose here. However, as an introduction to fieldwork it serves wonderfully. It's also extremely well-written and a genuinely enjoyable read. I plan to use it again for future classes, and I will recommend it to graduate students before they head off for their own fieldwork experiences.

Finally some new ideas for teachers using Google Apps!

I don't often write reviews on Amazon, however, this book is a GREAT resource. As a teacher in a district that uses Google Apps, this was one of the first books I read that gave me new ideas, instead of more of the same basic tips. It may only be 122 pages, but don't let that turn you away from purchasing this book. Many pages have valuable resources on it that require time to try them out and find what is best for you. Although I finished reading the text, I have a long way to go as far as exploring all the tools mentioned.
I labeled a few things I thought would have a significant improvement on my instruction, and will start creating those HyperDocs for the next school year. I showed a few colleagues who also value google apps as a means to enhance instruction and they all asked if they could borrow the book. Immediately they commented on how much they loved the layout/format of the writing and tools. I had to say no because it is not a book that goes on a shelf when you finish reading it. Between the resources in this book, and Alice Keeler's book, I think the way myself and co-teacher implement google apps into our instruction will be more engaging for the students, and lead to higher student success in our class. Myself and Co-Teacher thank the authors for a well put together book.

(One personal note: I generally purchase my books in the Kindle format, however, for this one I would recommend buying the physical copy)

This is THE book for any level teacher looking to learn how to easily weave all the pieces together in a well-packaged, strong, transformative 21st Century lesson design. Hyperdocs will engage learners with multi-layered, robust content. The Hyperdoc Handbook shows all teachers, coaches or administrators how to walk through the creation process with extensive reasoning, encouragement, step-by-step directions to build their own hyperdoc, numerous downloadable examples, tons of possible tech tools, extra tips & tricks, an most importantly - an open invitation to join the Teachers Give Teachers community. The Handbook will level up hyperdocs; the authors have explicitly focused on how the Four C's, ISTE Standards, DOK, and SAMR all need to be considered in the creation process. A summer must read!

You COULD read it cover to cover in the time it takes to get your hair done at the salon, but you would be missing the density and richness with which Highfill, Hilton, and Landis intended for the reader. The premise of this book is for educators to be guided through a process of repackaging lesson design using Google Apps to incorporate tons of digital content and to engage a wide range of learners. These HyperDocs can be used to personalize the learning experience, accommodating for Language Learners, students at risk, the GATE identified, and any other talent or uniqueness found in any particular classroom. This book is written clearly and concisely for beginning users of Google Apps, however, the content is so dense, Google Certified Educators will still walk away with great ideas. There are so many great examples that can be copied and modified. Others are joining this movement by posting to @TsgiveTs and #HyperDocs.

To Highfill, Hilton, & Landis... Way to go, Ladies! This is a great tool for educators. Thanks for helping us to transform the work we do for kids!

A Good Read

Carol Stimmel provides an articulate view of the potential of big data analytics to make the electric grid more resilient and secure in her book, Big Data Analytics Strategies for the Smart Grid. She does an excellent job speaking to both the consumer and the utility executive and defining the smart grid and big data analytics - and how the two are intertwined. While practical, the language and topics are also infused with hope and humor. In short: it's a good read.

Healing the wounded feeling function

"This book is about our wounded feeling function, probably the most common and painful wound which occurs in our Western world. It is very dangerous when a wound is so common in culture that hardly anyone knows there is a problem." Johnson opens his book with these provocative sentences. The first thing he does is convince the reader that the problem exists, and is of considerable scope. For example, our modern English language is not really adequate for a full description of the problem, having the vague and much abused word "feeling" and only one word, equally vague, for "love". Johnson, a Jungian analyst, explores the problem using myths -- the Fisher King and the Handless Maiden, to demonstrate the wounded feeling function in, respectively, masculinity and femininity. Through the myths, Johnson not only diagnoses the problem, but makes practical suggestions for healing. This wonderful little book, scarcely 100 pages long, can be read in an afternoon, although its insights could change the directions of a life.

A must read, with reservations...

I purchased this book because the Handless Maiden myth resonates for me, my having first been introduced to it through a dream and then through Clarissa Pinkola Estes book 'Women Who Run With Wolves'. I felt I had more to learn from this myth, and Johnson's book put the Handless Maiden myth in a matrix that helped me to understand it more personally, as a metaphor for the feminine in contemporary society. Placing it in a context I could understand so well brought this myth to life, and was the greatest value of this book for me.
The only off-putting thing, which changed it from 5 to 4 stars, is a small thing but which strikes to the heart of the issue. The author apologised in the beginning for perhaps not being able to do justice to the feminine wounding myth as much as the male myth. It was honest and ethical of him to state such concerns, which makes me respect his integrity, but he is alas, correct. As wonderful as his assessment of the Handless Maiden is, he still put a great deal of emphasis on the male value and aspects of it, which he did very little in reverse for the male Fisher King myth. The section in The Handless Maiden where he abandons such careful integrating of the masculine is the section which resonated most for me. I'm not sure why he did this, but if one goes through both chapters and counts instances of other-gender applicability you'll see what I mean. In one paragraph I almost felt like this myth was being ripped from my "hands" and given to the male, a dynamic of the actual myth.
Nevertheless, the author put the myth into a powerful and broad matrix of understanding for contemporary women, something which 'Women Who Run With Wolves', as much as I love it, didn't allow me to see as clearly. What I would suggest is first reading Johnson's book, and saving Clarissa Pinkola Estes interpretation for last, when you can appreciate it more, in all its profound and subtle complexity.

Profound and prescient

I have read this book twice, with many years in between.

In my youth, I thought Robert Johnson understood the myth of the Fisher King exceptionally well, but did not really understand the handless maiden. I attributed this to his gender bias, which he mentions at the beginning. He understands men better than women, from personal experience. I re-read the book again recently. I have been researching sexism, and I now understand things I simply was not aware of before. This time when I read the handless maiden myth, I was astounded. One of the things Robert Johnson talks about are the silver hands the king has made for the maiden. This is a metaphor for technology! And I was previously so enamored of technology that I could not even see the metaphor.

The highlights of the book are Johnson's re-interpretation of foundational mythology.

In the Fisher King, he tells the story of a king who is wounded in his feeling function. In modern terms, we would say he is damaged in his ability to experience emotions -- to relate to other people. He has respite from his pain only when he is fishing, hence the name. He lives in the castle of the holy grail. Direction to the castle are critical: the fisherman tells Parsifal (the youthful hero of the myth) that he should go "just down the road a little way, turn left, cross the drawbridge, and you will be my guest tonight." Johnson interprets these directions for us. "The specific instructions are to go down the road -- whatever road one is involved with at the moment -- turn left, which is to say go toward the unconscious or the world of imagination and fantasy, cross the drawbridge -- the division between our conscious world and the inner world of imagination -- and one will be in the grail castle, the miraculous place of healing." The book Johnson wrote -- all his books in fact -- are verbal guides to this process.

The story of the handless maiden is about a young girl whose hands were cut off as a consequence of her father's unwitting bargain with the devil. In modern terms we would say she is denied agency, just as men are denied emotional connectivity. But the story is so much more than that! A king falls in love with her and marries her. He had silver hands made for her, and these hands are widely admired in court. The silver hands stand for the technology we use as a barrier between ourselves and our deep persona -- specifically that place that is "down the road a little way, turn left, cross the drawbridge". The agency the maiden particularly lacks is the agency to access this process. She, like many modern people, relates more closely to her iPhone than to her companions. Silver-handedness is unbelievably attractive, even addictive. (Johnson wrote this book in 1993, so his illustration of silver-handedness is more mundane: a lavish hotel with silver dinnerware and fawning servants. Johnson would have recognized our current technology as more a more telling example.)

Johnson mentions that Jung was asked "Will we make it?" -- meaning will we survive as a civilization. Jung replied "Only if enough individuals do their inner work."

This book is a part of that inner work.
