Kale is back!

Inger has obviously figured out my weakness (no it's not for vampires) but for hot shirtless men, you have one on your cover you bet your arse I'll read your book! So if you haven't read the first book "Few Are Angels" and haven't read my read my review about it then you obviously don't know how much I love Kale, and I probably love him more in this book, because DANG the man is on a mission. He's also more temperamental in this book and with good reason, and it saddens me to say this but well I enjoyed it, I've never seen someone be as moody as him and it was fun to read about:
"Or maybe I want to send you back to Laurent with a message."
"Do I look like some errand boy to you?" The bald man stepped from the shadows. Anger marred his face.
"You telling me that you aren't Laurent's whipping boy?"
I just love Kale in general people, there really isn't a reason why the words that come out of his mouth amuse me, turn me, and leave me wanting more, "I'm good. Luckily I'm chory, and I don't have to worry about freezing me 'nads off. Maybe we could hurry this up? I'd like to get this show on the road sometime tonight." Laurent though didn't like him in book one sure as hell hated him in book two he's such a total ASS! "Laurent called his name. "If anyone other than me enters that room, end them." Like seriously man get over yourself! I loved when Elle and Kale were together they had so much playfulness and it made me happy (yes I'm a sappy person who likes butterflies and roses and romance) "This is very inappropriate, Kale," I said with a smile. With his own sly grin, Kale lifted himself all the way up and stood beside the bed. He held his hand out to me." The best thing about this book (well besides the plot) was the fact that there were perspectives from all the characters (well except Laurent's point of view I could care less about that ass anyway) and I like books who have more then one point of view of a character it allows us inside their head.

Fast-paced, witty, and sometimes heartbreaking

After reading the first book, Few Are Angels, I knew I had found something amazing, and now after finishing Awakened I'm even more excited about this series!

Receiving this book early had me dying to start it because I've been so excited ever since I finished Few Are Angels. I just couldn't wait to find out how this story was going to continue and what was going to happen to all the characters I've come to care for.

Awakened started out with a prologue. I love prologues, especially if they go way back and to start with such a great one was just awesome to me. That was the moment I was hooked. When we get to the present time Ella is missing. Kale, Jace, Alex and Mia are trying to come up with a plan to get her back, which isn't all that easy to do. In the meantime Ella is finding out that not everyone is who they seem to be...

Right from page one, I had a hard time stopping to read, even if it was in the middle of the night, because the story drew me in right away. I wanted to know where Ella was so I didn't stop reading until she appeared again.
The writing was really good. Fast-paced, witty, and sometimes heartbreaking. Just amazing, really.
I read Awakened in two days, which is really fast for me. I should've read slower but there just wasn't a way I could stop reading when I really got into it.
This book has multiple point of views. Sometimes it works for a book and sometimes it really doesn't because it could get confusing but that wasn't the case with Awakened. I LOVED reading not only about Ella but also about what the others in the meantime were doing. I can't say I had one favorite point of view that stuck out because they were all equally interesting to read.

New characters! Ah, how I love it when new characters are introduced. And I loved them all! Darke, Ana (though I am not sure if I like her anymore now...), Deacon, Tamsin, Servitto, Zed... but of course they didn't beat the familiar characters like Kale, Jace, Mia, Alex, Ella and of course Laurent (who's just so deliciously evil and manipulative).
There isn't that much romance in this book but the bit of it we got was so sweet and sexy. Kale is just sexy. I love him and I hope that he beats his struggle with la Luxure.
Another thing I loved was finding out more about this world full of immortals and Chorý.
And then there were also a lot of unexpected twist that were so nerve-wracking and just torturous... like what happened with Alex. Damn, I'm so scared for him! :s I freaked out so bad! But it wouldn't be as awesome if there weren't any twists like that. And that's why I love this story so much. You never know what's going to happen.

To say that I am excited for the next installment is an understatement. With everything that happened, especially on the end, *it was craaazy!*, I'll be for sure highly anticipating it.

Awakened is the perfect sequel to Few Are Angels. Not only did I read it in record time, I was sad to have it ended so soon. Fast-paced, funny, exciting and just plain wonderful, this book will leave you wanting so much more once in the end. I know it did for me.

Great Follow-up to the first book!

First I want to say if you haven't read this book yet then you need too! It was an AMAZING follow-up to the first book in the series "Few Are Angels"! This book was unlike anything I have EVER read! The writer sucks you in from the first page to the last and has you longing for more.

This book had me on the edge of my seat, my heart was pounding, my hands were shaking, and I wanted this book to NEVER END! Awakened had a solid plot and interesting characters that you love to hate! Ella was my favorite. I enjoyed seeing such growth within her from the first book to the second. I liked her character probably the most out of everyone. She made the book come alive, in my opinion.

Awakened has multiple point of views. So we get a full glimpse of what everyone is thinking and doing throughout the book. Which I enjoyed getting every ones point of views, instead of just one.

Right from the start of the Prologue things are complicated. Ella is having visions of a girl in trouble, a girl that will be used like herself. She thinks this girl will either save them from Laurent's wrath, and end Laurent's Tyrannical Rule or doom them and do as Laurent wishes!

Now Kale has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He must overcome many obstacles to keep the ones close to him safe! He has to do all this while trying to control the demon inside of him screaming to be let lose!

Ella has choices to make that will not only affect her, but also affect the ones around her! Ella learns of things she never could of imagined! The ones she thought she could trust are the ones that might very well betray her in the end!

The writing style was AMAZING! The writer knows how to draw the reader in and keep their full attention!

I really, really, enjoyed this book, maybe even a little more then the first book. But the first book was amazing too, and is A MUST READ for ALL "Few Are Angel Fans"!

Overall, I LOVE series and found it very entertaining and it had me wanting more in the end!'

I will be impatiently awaiting the next book in this series!

Good Beginner Material

I started a string trio recently and decided to pick this book up along with its companion cello and violin editions so we would have some easy material to fall back on during a wedding performance. These are simple one and two page arrangements and many of the tunes included are well know. I actually used some of the enclosed songs as filler for a wedding we played last week. All and all this is some nice beginner material I would estimate the material to be grade two or three. Advanced players and ensembles will find it to be quite elementary. I didn't find any typos in the songs that we chose to play, although, I thought some of the arrangements could have been a bit more interesting. The arrangements are open enough that you can improvise extra fill runs if you want to make the music sound a little more complicated. If you're looking for some easy string trio tunes this isn't a decent investment. Good luck.

As good as The World of Athens

Initially, I was a bit afraid to buy this book. I had read "The World of Athens" and thought this book "The World of Rome" would not be able to match it. I was wrong. "The World of Rome" is absolutely incredible, just like its counterpart about Ancient Greek History.

This book concentrates on a lot of important and accurate information. If you want a very good book on the subject, one that really unites both in depth descriptions of some very relevant matters and conciseness, I think you should buy this book and I don't think you will regret it.

Mostly, I was very afraid to buy this book because of its table of contents, which doesn't tell that much about the book and can be misleading. If that's your case also, don't trust the table of contents. The book is much better than the table of contents may suggest.

I also recommend this book if you already know a lot about Roman History and want to read a relatively short book that helps you organize many different ideas, one that enables you to remember things that we naturally forget after time. If that's what you are looking for, I believe this is a great book for that also.

Enjoyable read, especially for social history

I bought this book while traveling and finished the better half of it before arriving home two days later.
The core of the book provides an excellent overview of Roman culture in Geertz's sense of culture as what one would need to know to exist in everyday life as a member of the society. Despite the ambition of such a scope, I found the book to be extremely well organized with minimal repetition. There are very interesting discussions of such things as the economy, family, class, and slaves/freedmen. In contrast to the core of the book on Roman culture, the beginning few chapters on chronological history are rushed and muddled with debates about whether the Gracchi were good or bad that may be lost on a new reader. The historical aspect of the book is good to provide context to the discussion of culture but someone primarily interested in, say, the dictatorship of Sulla would be disappointed by the abbreviated treatment.

The Profession of Data Mining: Make this your First Read

Meta Brown has done an amazing job with this book. It takes the reader in a totally different direction than other books that have attempted to introduce Data Mining to a wider audience. Forgive the detail that I provide. I consider this a watershed book, and will need some room to make my case.

Tom Davenport's very successful books Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning have tried to make the case for Data Mining and Predictive Analytics. He has succeeded to a considerable degree, and I recommend his books. Berry and Linoff Data Mining Techniques: For Marketing, Sales, and Customer Relationship Management and Dean Abbott Applied Predictive Analytics: Principles and Techniques for the Professional Data Analyst have tried to explain some of the nuts and bolts, adopting different styles as they go, but both styles work, and both books are very good. Eric Seigel Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die has tried to be the consummate popularizer for Predictive Analytics. He has found a wide audience, and deservedly so, but he doesn't capture the Day in the Life. Rather, he tries to give a general audience a sense of why Data Mining matters.

Meta's book is the book that I wish I could have written. I don't think anyone else could have with quite the same style and flair. I know dozens of data miners, but Meta has honed the craft of explaining predictive analytics to a wide audience through years (many years) of diligent, non stop writing and public appearances - and the quality is very high. In another era, or perhaps in another industry, she would be a newspaper columnist, and a damn good one. She is a thought leader in a era where more claim it than earn it.

No other book - truly no other book - captures what it feels like to do what we when we are doing data mining like this book does. The highly successful For Dummies series works because everyone knows that they can read a book in this series first. You won't get half way through, and find yourself lost. Meta has somehow honored that implicit agreement, and yet transcended the genre. This is a truly important book. I bet there are plenty of data mining "certificate" students that have mastered their software tool of choice, but have failed to internalize half of the lessons that Meta has provided here. Yet, the lessons are consumed painlessly, and reading this book is actually quite frequently fun.

One of the things that Meta has done masterfully is to allow the software operations, although present, to fade into the background. They aren't left out completely as that actually could be distracting, but they never take center stage. She isn't shy about details, but she is so wonderfully and wisely judicious about which details she indulges in that you barely notice how much you are learning. Finally, one of the chapters, literally called A Day in your Life as a Data Miner, is just brilliant. It succeeds in its goal in a way that no other books on the subject, and I've read dozens, manages to do. The fact that she boldly places a chapter like that as the second chapter underscore just how well she can explain the thought process without getting bogged down in the technical details, technical details that could easily fill a 1000 page tome.

What do the book cover? There are good chapters on Tom Khabaza's Nine Laws of Data Mining and CRISP-DM. These chapters represent critical background for Data Mining using any combination of software tools that you would encounter. These are combined with an overall of available tools. You could read dozens of books on the subject and would be lucky to find a handful that are truly tool neutral. At best, software neutrality is represented by having two or three software options represented. So how are you going to decide which software option makes sense? Read this book first.

Much of what follows is pretty much required content, and it is well presented. There is an overview of techniques and algorithms. It manages to be a brisk easy read while also being thorough enough to introduce some important concepts. Clearly written for beginners, it is not watered down. If you have encountered a book on the subject where you felt that the explanations were just out of your reach, then read these sections first, and you will be ready for the numerous books that discuss the algorithms in technical detail.

Importantly data preparation is not ignored. You truly get a feel for what preparing data for data mining is like. Despite the fact that almost all authors claim that it is the most important step, they then proceed to invest no pages in it. You will have to find a book dedicated to your tool of choice to read next, but this is a great place to start. Also, if you have ambitions to be a data miner, but are not yet in the role, the section on Public Data Sources will be especially useful. While useful to any data miner, these resources are just waiting for your discovery and analysis. Finally, a classic For Dummies addition is Ten Great Resources for Data Miners. The author probably could have listed ten times that many so you know that these "top ten" are going to be a great place to start.

I can not recommend this book more highly as first book in your journey to become a data miner.

Data Mining For Dummies is for anyone interested in learning about data mining and BigData from a world-class expert!

Full Disclosure: I connected with the author of Data Mining For Dummies, Ms. Meta Brown, on LinkedIn about a month ago, in September 2014. Before then, I had never heard of "data mining" or "BigData." After several chats with Ms. Brown, I dived into the once-esotheric deep of data mining and BigData . . . and will be forever grateful to her for having introduced me! I purchased the ebook on my own, on 04 October 2014, and blazed through it, cover to cover, in one sitting. Yes, it was *that* compelling, fascinating, well written, and presented!

As an aside, I am a former scientist, trained in physics, engineering and biology. So I LOVE mathematics and statistics and experimental design. Meta Brown's Data Mining For Dummies is now my fave book on statistical analysis, in general, even though Data Mining For Dummies covers sooo much more. I wish she would rewrite all the statistics and analyses books I studied in university and grad school.

As much as I want to tell you that Data Mining For Dummies is for everyone out there . . . sadly, it is not.

This gem is written for those who at least appreciate general-level mathematics, statistics and experimental design, and how to apply these general yet powerful tools to study various problems and issues in any field.

However, those of you who do not fall into this narrow category above can rest assured that you can and will glean much from Data Mining For Dummies simply by studying the chapter titles, major and minor headings, helpful tips and lists, and using the wonderful resources Ms. Brown has included. Data Mining For Dummies can be understood on an elementary level by employing this method, which then will encourage you to seek assistance from an expert in the field. That way, she will fill you in on the details you did not read about or understand when you glanced through the book on your own.

In this regard, Data Mining For Dummies is for anyone interested in learning about data mining and BigData, and how to gain even better knowledge about these new and exciting subjects and fields.

So, whom is this book truly for?

Data Mining For Dummies is an excellent resource for IT, SAM and ITAM managers and quality-control personnel, all of whom have ready access to BigData from their own respective company. While Ms. Brown has gone out of her way to make the book easily accessible and readable, even conversational (yay!), it is still somewhat advanced for the average professional. Therefore, it is up to the expert to take this book and help the uninitiated (e.g. The Boss) understand and appreciate what data mining and BigData are, how they can assist you in revealing new and helpful patterns about your own BigData, and how to implement what you've studied, discovered and learned to the bottom line of your business.

What I really love about Data Mining For Dummies are Ms. Brown's "9 Laws of Data Mining," which can be applied to other fields, as well:
1. Business Goals: Business objectives are the origin of every data-mining solution
2. Business Knowledge: Business knowledge to every step of the data-mining process
3. Data Preparation: Data preparation is more than half of every data-mining process
4. Right Model: The right model for a given application can only be discovered by experiment
5. Pattern: There are always patterns
6. Amplification: data mining amplifies perception in the business domain
7. Prediction: Prediction increases information locally by generalization
8. Value: The value of data-mining results is not determined by the accuracy or stability of predictive models
9. Change: All patterns are subject to change

Another very helpful bit of intel is Table 6-1 The Elements of a Business Case:
Situations, Options, Benefits, and Costs. This intel also can be used in almost any business proposal, because it addresses some of the most important elements of a business, in general. I found myself making copious notes on my online Kindle reader, then transcribing them to pieces of paper to hang on my wall in my office!

As stated previously, Data Mining For Dummies also has very helpful resources, including many online sites that have helpful statistics about . . . anything! If you're a researcher on labor or business or nonprofits, then you'll find some useful sites to visit. Ms. Brown also lists two dozen portals for federal and local government data and statistics that have FREE data. You also can buy data from sources she lists, as well.

I highly recommend Data Mining For Dummies to anyone who:
1. Has a business or venture or project, and would like to improve its bottom line
2. Would like to get up to speed on the latest in data mining and BigData
3. Would like to become a data miner
4. Supports The Boss as an IT, ITAM, SAM person

Bravo to Ms. Meta Brown for producing what is most certain to become a BIG part of the foundation of knowledge of these hot topics, data mining and BigData!
