Peter Decherney is Professor of Cinema Studies and English and Director of the Cinema Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Hollywood’s Copyright Wars: From Edison to the Internet and Hollywood and the Culture Elite: How the Movies Became American.

Blake Atwood is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the coordinator of the Persian Language Program and an affiliate of the Program in Comparative Literature.

Great, Informative, and enjoyable!

Art for Art's Sake and Literary Life: How Politics and Markets Helped Shape the Ideology and Culture of Aestheticism, 1790-1990 (Stages)

I discovered this writer when I was looking for opinions about the Nobel Prize Garcia Marquez, "Garcia marquez the Man and His Work," and I was fascinated for the accuracy about Colombian history and the way he related it with the author's life and ouvre.
Recently, curious to know what others books he had written; I found this one which catch my attention for its title, ART FOR ART'S SAKE, because it has been an old controversy.
The book includes two hundred years of philosophy, critic, literatura, and poetry in a rich account on the most brilliant exponents. Ranging from enlightment to Latin American literary Boom. Sometimes giving a litle touch on one of the personages, and other times giving a profound account of them because of its deep relation with the study he had in mind.
I greatly recommend this book because is richly informative and relaxing and enjoyable.

Great book with 2 major flaws

Elegantly written, thought-provoking, abrasive, and immensely informative, Bell-Villada's essay is nonetheless affected by two important flaws: its relative lack of focus, especially toward the end of the book, and its rigid application of a left v. right girdle. Bell-Villada obviously believes that the left is always good and progressive, with the possible exception of Joseph Stalin, whereas the right and the center are innately deficients, both morally and intellectually, for they either call for a return to the past or for a blind defense of the statu quo. The problem here is theoretical. Arguably, the milieu of artists is ill suited for this kind of Manichean mutilation. Many artists, in modern times, have adopted syncretic political dispositions comprising ingredients such as contempt for the statu quo and rejection of dominant values (especially utilitarianism), this leading them either to fascism or to bolchevism, with a great deal of transactions between the two (it is significant that Bell-Villada does not have much to say about Ezra Pound!). Most fascists were also revolutionary and anti statu-quo: in fact, many were attempting to revitalize socialism. Rather than using only "left v. right", Bell-Villada should have added other variables such as "romantic v. enlightenment" and "liberal v. anti-liberal", and use them all with a great deal of flexibility.

New Edition Necessary

I am sorry to say that I am disappointed in this book. While other editions may have been better, this one is riddled with typos, grammatical errors, and disorganized chapters while fail to focus on the nutrition and feeding aspect of their sections.

Appendix version

All I can say is be careful when purchasing this book. My sister ordered this book and when the package arrived, it was the appendix version (gray cover) - Not the blue cover version of the book. So I ordered the book also to see if I would get the actual blue version of the book, and I got the appendix version too. So it ended up costing us money because we had to return it, and amazon doesn't have a selection for "not the book ordered"

School Textbook

This is one of those textbooks that you'll keep long after the class is over - I was skeptical when I opened the book for the first time and realized that it was much more of a resource text than a traditional textbook, there are no pictures and the text is supplemented only with scientific tables and graphs. However, I realized that in the long run it would be much more useful! If you want a comprehensive overview of animal nutrition you really can't do better then ponds!

About the Author
Matthew Brehm is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Idaho, where his teaching responsibilities include design studios, graphics courses, and an annual two-month study abroad program in Rome, Italy. Matthew was involved as a founding Board Member of Urban Sketchers and has presented workshops and lectures at several of the group’s International Symposiums. He is the author of Sketching on Location.

Insightful and practical guide to perspective

For this particular book, I think it's targeted at people who draw on location because most of the examples featured are those drawn from location. However, you can use the concepts to create your own scenes and elements in perspective too.

The book covers five types of perspective, namely 1-point, 2-point, 3-point, multi-point and curvilinear. And lastly there's the workbook section with 32 pages of perspective grids for you to practice drawing on.

Each chapter is huge and is broken down into helping you identify the different types of perspective, understanding them, and how you can apply them yourself to your drawing. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The writeup is informative and in depth. There are lots of wonderful illustrated examples contributed by artists over the world, included the author Matthew Brehm himself.

It's a practical guide actionable techniques you can try out for yourself.

If you've always found perspective to be challenging, this is a good straightforward book to demystify this subject for you. After you've learned the techniques, this book is still worth revisiting for the beautiful sketches included.

By the way, there are different publishers for this book. The book I have is published by Page One, the other publisher I know of is Barron's Educational Series. Content should be the same. The book's a 144-page paperback.

It is also an ideal 'textbook' for teaching perspective.
