Overall a great, useful resource

Great book, nicely detailed. One minor complaint: perhaps I don't understand the way these things are supposed to be laid out, but sometimes the names of the guitar chords given reflect the key change brought about by the placement of the capo on the neck, and sometimes they don't. Also, the fingerings for the chords are given sometimes, but not always. This isn't a real problem as the tabs are very good. But lest this review sounds too negative, let me stress that that the book is really a great collection of sheet music for some fantastic and difficult (at least for me!) songs.
Oh yeah, one other little thing (not related to the sheet music): the book description describes "Martin Barre's ground-breaking acoustic work" and as I understand it from the albums themselves, it's Ian Anderson playing acoustic guitar.

About the Author

Paola Sassi is a practicing architect and partner of Sassi Chamberlain Architects and lecturer in design, technology and sustainability at the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University.

Her experience from two decades of architectural practice combined with her knowledge of sustainable design, gained from independent research, an M.Sc. in Advanced Environment and Energy Studies (1995-1997) and sustainable building practice, has provided her with a broad overview of the issues of sustainability and an in-depth knowledge and experience of implementing the theory into practice.

As part of her teaching activities, which include teaching environmental technologies and social and ecological sustainability, she has researched and compiled teaching material on a wide range of topics relating to sustainable architecture. Her current research topics include environmental building performance assessments, sustainable building materials, waste minimisation, design for dismantling, reuse and recycling, and ethics of sustainability.

Italian Honeymoon

Recently my wife and I were planning a two week, once in a lifetime trip though Italy. We were very excited to see the entire country but realized that communicating might be difficult as we got into the Tuscan countryside. With this in mind we picked up a copy of Instant Italian Vocabulary Builder.
Although my wife and I had a bit of Spanish and Italian while in college, we didn't retain nearly enough of the language and its structure to feel comfortable on our trip. We each spent some of our free time reading though this book and were simply amazed at how much we retained. This method of learning worked wonders for the both of us and we commented to each other on our trip that we feel we learned more in the short time spent with this book than in our entire college experience.
This level of comfort with the language helped make our honeymoon a truly unforgettable experience. It allowed us to put our concerns aside and to enjoy our time in the Tuscan wine country. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast and easy way to pick up the Italian language. Simply the best learning tool I've used while studying a foreign language.

Miraculous!!

I never thought it could be that easy. I have tried classes and and other textbooks in the past. Tom has really discovered a way for people who find learning languages challenging, such as myself, to really connect and understand how words and sentances are formed in the Italian language. It not only helps people to understand what is being said, but more importantly enables people to interact in a full on conversation. It has really given me hope from the several years of discouragement I have had trying other teacher's methods.
I highly recommend anyone who needs and/or wants to learn or expand thier knowledge of foriegn language to order this version.
It is easy and understandable for all levels. The most effective method I have ever read.

Don't buy this book

I don't often write reviews, but I had to this time. The book in question is pretty worthless. I was very disappointed. In fact I will never buy a book from this series again. Basically, it is a list of words in Italian that are almost the exact same as what the word would be in English but with different suffixes. For example, the english version is important but the Italian version is importante. The English version is incredible the Italian version incredibile. In other words you can guess what the word means anyway. Don't buy the book. If I could have given it a quarter star I would have.

Great General Programming Book, Lacks in OOP for experienced Programmers

This a good read for beginner- to intermediate- JavaScript programmers, and also as a primer for programmers coming from other languages C-based languages. The first part of the book focuses on basic JavaScript - primitives, functions, and objects. It progresses to overview of prototyping and inheritance - more advanced topics but still fairly general. The best thing about the book in general is that it abstracts programming JavaScript away from the strictly web based, client-side approach. There are great sections on things like self-invoking anonymous functions, variable hoisting, overloading methods, and a solid but not extensive overview of built in functions.

The best chapter for the true object-oriented enthusiast will be the chapter on design patterns. It first focuses on general best practices and patterns immediately involved with JavaScript, and progresses to the traditional Singleton, Factory, Observer, and Decorator patterns as they apply to JavaScript. Anyone who has implemented these patterns in other languages will find this to be the meat and potatoes of the book. Appendices are pretty standard by JavaScript book standards - reserved words, built in functions, built in objects, and regular expressions.

Overall - a 4/5 for a solid exposure to programming JavaScript, but it loses a point for not truly getting to the nitty gritty of OOP that would be expected by someone coming from Ruby, C#, or Java.

Javascript to the next level

If you want to take your Javascript skills to the next level this is a great book to start with. The explanations are to the point and short. The content is very rich and keep me wanting to dive in to learn more. For me this wasnt a book that you read just once and move on. I have referred to several chapters and/or concepts over and over to make sure I have a complete understanding. I do think the closure explanation with the image is better described in the 1st edition though.

Overall a very good book, but I say that in regards to intermediate and above developers. Describes things very well and a lot of examples. But I felt the Chapter on Prototypes and Chapter on Patterns were hard to understand.

AMAZING!

I received this ARC while attending BEA last year in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.

I picked up Elly Blake’s debut novel, Frostblood, by chance at BEA last year. I love a good fantasy and when I saw Morgan Rhodes’ praise on the cover, I figured I just might get along swimmingly with Elly and her new world. And I was quite right indeed!
Fantasy worlds can be hard to understand at the best of time. Too much detail and you will overwhelm a reader and too little detail might just lead to confusion, but Elly does things just right! In this fantasy world we see two key groups, the frostbloods and the firebloods. And they both basically wield powers of their given element. Frostbloods are the ones who are more in control of things, in fact, firebloods are dying out. Ruby is one of the remaining ones, and is really the only one we meet in this book. Whether there are more out in the world in hiding is not something that is explored just now. Ruby is taken prisoner for being a fireblood and after witnessing her mother murdered, she wants nothing more than to take revenge on the man who killed her. It’s a few months after her arrest that she’s rescued by a pair of frostbloods, and in this world these two groups do not get along.
The frostbloods rescued her with the intent that she be trained and used to help take down the current frostblood king who is get a bit tyrannical in his ruling. But Ruby barely has any control over her abilities and has until the summer solstice to train.
Ruby is taken in by this group of monks, who for the most part, treat her kindly. Well, a few of them anyway, some treat her with disdain and others are just wary. But the one who drives her the most insane in the young man named Arcus who is always wearing a hood that hides his face from her and others. These two have no love or like for one another. There’s disdain and pettiness between them. But at the same time, it’s almost quite comical. Yes, Arcus comes off as cold and unfeeling, befitting to his frostblood nature, but naturally, the reader can tell there is a reason for that. He has his own story that we will soon learn as Ruby’s story continues.
I must say, I am quite the fan of the hate/dislike to romance stage of things. It’s very rare, when I am actually taken by surprise of a hate to romance situation. For the most part I can totally see when the hate will become love and that doesn’t really bother me too much. What I tend to like about this scenario is how long the love takes to build. To me, that speaks of real life romance. I’d like to think it will take time before true feelings and love come about and we totally get that here. Granted it might come somewhat early page count wise, but a book can only be so long, unfortunately! ;)
The second half of the book was really quite exciting. Ruby is taken prisoner (again) by the king, this time! And he has a special hate for firebloods, but instead of an outright execution he’s a fan of the good old Roman days of Colosseum battles and fights to the death. Ruby is pitted against enemy after enemy all while the king and his power source are within her reach.
The book is divided into two parts, the first part has a nice slow burn of buildup. We’re learning about the characters, the world, seeing things slowly begin to develop, while the second part is where a lot of action takes place. We get encounters with our villain and an even greater evil as well! There was so much to this part! So many shocks and surprises! It was amazing!
The ending to this one was perfect! We get a nice roundabout conclusion, yet Elly still leaves a few minor threads dangling to keep us hooked and awaiting release of the next book. Because there has to be a next book! And curse my reading this one early! While the cliffhanger rates very low on the agonizing scale of needing the next book now, I still need to have the next book now because I just want to know what will happen to these characters that I have come to love so completely!
Frostblood is definitely one incredibly amazing fantasy read that had me turning the pages as fast as I could! It was an exciting and thrilling read filled with impeccable characters and I am already looking forward to the next one! Be sure to add Elly Blake to your list of authors to watch out for! She’s already on the fast track to my list of favorite authors!!

An epic and enthralling standout in the genre

A fascinating world, an intriguing prophecy, and awesome and deadly powers are just a few of the things that make FROSTBLOOD a thrilling and riveting one-sit read. Add in a curse, a quest for vengeance, epic clashes between fire and ice, gladiator-esque arena battles, dark forces, secrets, betrayal, tragedy, and a bit of romance, and you have a story that is unputdownable.

Ruby is a Fireblood living in a world where who she is could get her imprisoned or killed. Frostbloods fear and hate her kind and the Frostblood King uses Firebloods for sport. Born without the fiery red hair that would immediately identify her as an enemy, all she had to do was suppress her abilities and she could escape notice.

But her curiosity about her powers and her carelessness in concealing them meant discovery was inevitable. She just never imagined her mistakes would cost her the one person in the world that she loved.

Ruby was prepared to accept her fate - a quick death by the hand of the King or a slow death in prison. But when offered the chance to escape, to avenge her loss, and to attempt to take down the Frostbloods' dark ruler, she accepted. Even if the chance of success was slim and even if it meant working with her enemies to do so. Because even if they ultimately failed, the alliance would help her master her fiery powers and help keep alive the flames of rage that burned in her heart.

Elly Blake penned an amazing start to her series. She gave readers a heroine who is powerful, flawed, interesting, and sympathetic. She created a world steeped it in myth, with a captivating and exciting history, filled it with citizens whose abilities are polar opposites, a bevy of exotic creatures, and a ruler whose cruelty knows no bounds, and set it at a time when battles to the death were entertainment, when prophecies and legends were more than just stories, and when being a ruler corrupted or killed.

FROSTBLOOD is a standout in a genre brimming with tales of evil rulers, dark magic, incredible abilities, and clashing clans. It reveals a past that is every bit as engaging as the story’s present. It introduces characters to root for. It builds a strong foundation for the story’s continuation in books to come. It leaves readers in anticipation of what’s next without leaving them dangling off a cliff. And it does all this in a way that makes for an enthralling and heartbreaking and absolutely extraordinary read.

Powerful debut

Ruby is a Fireblood living in a kingdom ruled by Frostbloods and forbidden to use her power lest she be killed for them. But when soldiers attack her village, Ruby has no choice but to reveal herself. An unexpected offer from a Frostblood rebel looking to overturn the current (insane) king propels Ruby into an uneasy alliance that will alter both their lives.

I loved the energy in this book--both Ruby's passion and Arcus's. I loved that Ruby was unflinching--that sometimes she had to do terrible things, and those hurt her, but she never lost herself because of it. And I loved the slowly smouldering romance.

I can't wait to see where Blake takes the rest of the series.

Contemporary Crowley

In the last 50 years, there have been a slew of books that have come out about Aleister Crowley, and his work. Most of these books contain information that is either regurgitated or promoted in the name of clarity. While Mr. Crowley was publicly known in many areas during his life, there was just as much that was hidden, and these are the two areas that most authors write about. However, what sets this book apart from the rest is the originality of its author, Paul Weston. In this book, Paul takes knowledge that is readily available, and draws conclusions that are his own, bring Mr. Crowley, his work, and events that have happened since then, into clearer light. To follow this approach up, he does something that very few if any, authors have done effectively, which is that he puts things in a contemporary light. He looks at synchronous events, and events that have happened since Mr. Crowley left the physical plane, and draws conclusions about how it all ties together. He also does a wonderful job of showing where things are now with those that work with Crowley's system, as well as the decades that have occurred since Mr. Crowley's death. An exceptionally lucid work, this is a must have for those that are seeking to tie together threads over the last 50 years that are not clear in other works. Of particular note is the perspective that he takes, as he doesn't just address the magick of Aleister Crowley, but rather he looks at his subject from a holistic perspective, which provides entertainment without juvenility, for those that can handle it. Exceptionally done!

A good overview

Paul Weston has taken a stand back and look from a distance view of Crowley (rhymes with Holy) that ties the events leading to the Book of the Law to a host of other famous luminaries from Jack Parsons and L Ron Hubbard to Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson.

I liked it. I found the book readable, compelling and eminently balanced in its approach.

If you are interested in a new take on an old demon I recommend that you read this book.

Very possibly the best book I've ever read on Crowley. Save yourself some time, and read this book for a direct hit of all that is best.
It takes all that dry rehashing of the facts that so many people have done, stirs them up, and brings Crowley to life in a way that is fascinating and unbiased, interactive and weird, comprehensive and well researched, and you get both sides of the picture, despite Paul's obvious love of Crowley, he is not unbalanced or naive in his summing up one of history's most intriguing figures.

I would totally recommend this book if you have any interest in Crowley, because it will refresh your appreciation of him no end.
