A very complete overview

A little background about me first: I'm a senior developer on a large database-centric project. I bought this book to give my intern (and coworkers needing a refresher) an introduction to databases. Before I loaned it to him I read it over a few nights. It turned out to be a good refresher for me as well! Shortly before I got this book I was discussing database normalization with a coworker, and neither of us could remember which normal form was which (we knew to implement them, just not which went with which number). This book explained normalization very clearly - probably the most concise definition I've seen.

The book is heavy with examples and ties everything into a "real world" example: how to create a database to organize the data in the protagonists' kingdom. The format of each chapter is the same: comic to advance the story and give context to the database concepts being introduced, followed by explanatory text and review questions. The book covers everything from "what is a database" to database security and data replication.

Before I could give the book to my intern to read our database administrator took it and read it. He had very high praise for this book - he felt it was an engaging, accurate introduction to database concepts. The book was equally helpful to my intern - the SQL examples really helped him out.

If you're going to be studying databases or need to become familiar with how they operate you won't go wrong with this book. You'll even learn basic SQL syntax...this book is a great introduction and good start to working with databases.

Not a textbook, but a very good start.

Fun, simple introduction to databases. No one should think that they understand DBs after reading this, but if you were planning on studying databases (either in a class or real world setting), it would provide a good groundwork on which to build. Plus, it's fun enough that you probably won't get bored reading about 3rd normal form.

I'll edit this review if I can convince my 10 year old daughter to read it, with her thoughts.

overall nice; a few nitpicks

Overall I found this book quite nice and helpful. I have 13 years of experience as a professional programmer but I've never done any database programming. The reason I'm writing this review is to raise one question/nitpick about the example application that it uses pretty much throughout. The example portrays it as feature that once a database is used, prices used in orders automatically update when prices change. It seems to me this is a bug, not a feature. In designing a real system, the prices recorded in an order should remain fixed at the time of order, shouldn't they? Maybe I'm looking for this example to be too realistic. On the other hand, this seems to me such an obvious concern that it makes the example a bit confusing.

My other nitpick is one I saw raised elsewhere, which is that the SQL syntax used for joins is a bit weird. In particular the JOIN keyword is not used; instead the join conditions are placed in the WHERE clause. The place where I saw this nitpick raised suggested it was an older syntax. In general joins are not really delved into, but I can't really fault the book for that; it is not trying to be an in-depth book.

This book comes with pre made flashcards for easy practice, chapters that follow a practical and logical sequence, and a CD-Rom that allows you to hear pronunciations of the specific medical terms covered. This book is providing my first exposure to medical terminology, and I feel it is a great resource now, and it will continue to be in the future as well. It has my recommendation!

About the Author
Andrew R. Conn is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. He is an honorary visiting professor in Veszprém, Hungary. His current major application projects are in the petroleum industry.

Katya Scheinberg is a Research Staff Member in the Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. She has been working in the area of derivative-free optimization for over 10 years and is the author of multiple papers on the subject as well as the widely known open-source DFO software.

Luis Nunes Vicente is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. His research interests include the development and analysis of numerical methods for large-scale nonlinear programming and derivative-free optimization problems, and applications in sciences, engineering, and finance. He serves as associate editor of the SIAM Journal on Optimization and the Journal of Global Optimization.

Roy Grace Gets My Vote

I heard Peter James talk at the Bristol Crimefest last May. (The Crimefest was lots of fun--good speakers, relatively small conference.) People love this guy! And as he spoke, I could understand why. He seemed really cool, nice, interested in readers. He told interesting stories about how he first made an acquaintance with a cop---his place was broken into! And he would up being friends with the detective. Anyway, the main point is that he has a huge, loyal following, esp. for the Roy Grace series. Fellow friends at the conference told me to start with the first book, Dead Simple.

It had good tension and followed several interesting characters. About halfway through I started skipping some of the description--I didn't need to know quite that many details, but I was interested enough to follow the storyline and stayed up late a couple of nights to get to a "good" stopping point.

Roy Grace himself is interesting, quirky, and reasonable--most of the time, which is what makes him interesting. I will definitely read the second book in the series. I'm not sure I have the stamina for all of them, but let's see!

Gripping

I have never read a Peter James book before and now I am so happy to have all his books to look forward to. Dead Simple had me hooked from the first chapter. What a gripping tale. Keeps you in suspense the whole time. There was maybe a little bit too much description of buildings etc but that just could have been me being impatient to get to the meaty bits. Havnt wanted to pick up a book this much for ages.

because of the terrible writing. I did think the story line was ...

I have now read several of Peter James' Inspector Grace novels. I was almost completely put off by this, the first one, because of the terrible writing. I did think the story line was interesting - not necessarily the plot line - so I went on. It seems Mr. James has either learned the basics of English grammar or has found an editor. This is good. Nonetheless, the subsequent books are still deeply flawed.

1) Mr. James, editor or not, still constructs some of the worst sentences I have read outside undergraduate papers.
2) Each book is laden with pages of boilerplate from earlier books. I understand that a series author wants to inform newcomers - who are reading the books out of order - of certain basics, but I would hope a creative writer might change up some descriptive passages for readers of previous books. I regularly skip the descriptions of the crime center, Grace's colleagues, and the locale.
3) A good writer avoids repetition within a single volume. James does not do this. 'Seriously' seems to be his favorite adjective: seriously big breasts, seriously horny, seriously aroused, seriously whatever. Along the same lines, it seems that Brits think "Oh sit, s***, s***" whenever alarmed. About to be murdered? "Oh, s***, s***, s***." About to be found out as a criminal? "Oh s***, s***, s***." Realizing one might have mad a faux paux with a prospective love interest? "Oh s***, s***, s***." And so on.

Again, the story ideas are good. They need a better writer to make them work. There are so many good - really good- writers who author mysteries. This is not one of them.
