John J. Murphy's ZENTREPRENEUR Speaks to the Core of what it takes to succeed
By Cyrus Webb
It was an article called "How to Awaken the Zentrepreneur in You" that first introduced me to John J. Murphy, and after reading it I was ordering the book ZENTREPRENEUR at my favorite bookstore and devoured it. Using his own experiences and what he has gleaned over the years Murphy shares how you can combine Zen practice in your journey as an entrepreneur-- but the book goes farther than that. As the article I read stated: "Whatever it is we do, whether we run a household, our own business, or work for a company, there is a "zentrepreneur" within us all- a soul seeking release and a creative idea seeking expression and manifestation." This means that there are ways to take this practice and make it a lifestyle for yourself.

In the book ZENTREPRENEUR we are able to ask and answer key questions about ourselves, what we want and more importantly what is keeping us from going after it. As Murphy has learned "good ideas are not without risk". That means that we have to be willing to step out on what I call faith and pursue what we want, even if others (and even ourselves) tell us it's not possible.

So many people have great ideas but they are unwilling to do the work to see them realized or birthed. Murphy encourages us to remove the limitations we have set for ourselves and dare greatly. Will everything work out perfectly? No. Will there be challenges? Of course! But the important thing is how you see those challenges and how you use what they teach you as you keep moving forward.

Murphy encourages us to listen to our soul, allow it to guide you. This will help you to realize that you can't change the past or even the present. All you can change is yourself and how you are adapting to what is. Using that information we are able to find true happiness and success in whatever we choose to pursue.

Timely and powerful, John J. Murphy's ZENTREPRENEUR speaks to the core of what it takes to succeed.

The cost of doing nothing
By Christine LaChance
I almost did not buy this book, but I am so glad I did. One of the biggest "aha" moments for me is when "The cost of doing nothing" was addressed. Mr. Murphy used examples from his own experience and from a business perspective to address this topic. In my own experience if I had not purchased this book I would not have 3 pages of logical, yet extremely helpful advise on how to be a successful leader, entrepreneur, motivator, problem solver, and human being. Having spent many years in the corporate world as a business leader my experience has taught me that silos exist everywhere, it is very rare that organization work as a system. Mr. Murphy outlines a "Zen" approach to breaking down barriers, building teams, creating an environment where collaboration and healthy conflict are encouraged, and practical solutions to problem statements are addressed. All organizations are systems and dependent on each part to function as designed, when only the symptom is addressed, the system will break again. It requires behavioral change, culture change. “Culture changes when the system changes” Mr. Murphy used this platform to share his failures, successes, lessons learned, and passion with us - practicing the age old rule that you must give to receive. As Murphy stated - "I am in the business of transformational change" and I feel that I now have one more "tool" in my tool box to be successful at overcoming disbelief, which ultimately creates a change that is transforming. Thank you Mr. Murphy for your wisdom.

Conscious Endeavors for Successful Businesses and Life
By Sheryl Glick, RMT, host of Healing from Within
Zentrepreneur delivers a powerful message and shares with the reader ways to look at improving the internal workings of any business organization, much the same way we must look at our individual spiritual progress for better results. Growth, as a result, is achieved through following practices that recognize harmony and balance between human awareness, alignment to universal energy and developing clearer preceptions for the improvement of one's quality of life. John- through sharing his challenging and empowering life experiences, shows us the way forward to accept responsibility for any event, not buying into a victimhood type of thinking and extinguishing any fear that holds us back from reaching our full potential.

From Publishers Weekly
Following a trip to his dentist, 73-year-old Klein considers his options after being advised that he needs tooth implants or a denture. Klein (Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar) opts for a sojourn to the Greek island of Hydra. Accompanied by a suitcase crammed with philosophy books, Klein contemplates the Greek philosopher Epicurus' pivotal question. He fundamentally wanted to know how to make the most of his one life, writes Klein. Eschewing the forever young treadmill many American's embrace, Klein explores a different path, examining the relaxed Greek lifestyle surrounding him. He laments what's lost in the frantic rush to stay youthful: And we have no time left for a calm and reflective appreciation of our twilight years, no deliciously long afternoons sitting with friends or listening to music or musing about the story of our lives. The author ruminates on the benefits of freeing ourselves from the prison of everyday affairs; the pleasures of companionship in old age; battling boredom; the difference between sexual urges and sexual nostalgia; and the value of facing death blissfully. Along the way, Klein touches on the ideas of Bertrand Russell, Erik Erikson, Aristotle, and William James. Klein's narrative is a delightful and spirited conversation, offering up the ingredients inherent to the art of living well in old age. Agent: Julia Lord. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Klein (Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar, 2008, among others) returned to the Greek island of Hydra at age 73. His return had a new and specific purpose: “I want to figure out the most satisfying way to live this stage of my life.” Prior experience with the island led to conclude that the “old folks of Hydra have always struck me as uncommonly content with their stage in life.” But just observing and absorbing what the people had to show and tell him didn’t seem like quite enough. To augment his on-site learning, he took with him a stack of philosophy books by ancient Greeks as well as some modern writers. It’s an interesting formula, resulting in a lovely little book with both heart and punch, an argument against the “forever young” syndrome so prevalent in contemporary American society. His contemplative time spent observing the old men of Hydra while reading his small library of the great thinkers led him to an “evolving philosophy of a good and authentic old age.” --Brad Hooper

How to be happy
By Marlene Storie
Daniel Klein is a modest writer; he feels obliged to consult and pay tribute to the philosophers, ancient and modern, who have had wise things to say about the meaning of life, especially the question of how to deal with growing old. But the real charm of this book lies in following Klein as he wanders around his idyllic Greek island, observing how the contented locals there deal with aging, and arriving at his own wry but upbeat answers to the age-old questions.

Not only is the glass half full, but it is filled with something simple, heartwarming and tasty. Epicurus would be proud.

If you are wondering how to deal with growing older, this is your book
By Annette Hollander
Without telling you WHAT to think, Dan Klein suggests HOW we can think about growing older in any number of interesting ways. Reading this book is like conversing with a friend who knows some of the best quotes from philosophers - from ancient Greece to today- to help focus the conversation. We join the author on his Greek Island- vividly depicted- as he clarifies thoughts that have crossed the mind of anyone over 65 who lives thoughtfully, and adds some new ones.
This book was very satisfying to read and savor, a few chapters at a time. It is emphatically NOT about how to stay forever young. It does point the way to finding more delight and meaning as we move toward the end of our lives.

A Different Democracy: American Government in a 31-Country Perspective, by Steven L. Taylor, Matthew Soberg Shugart, Arend Lijphart, Berna

American democracy differs greatly from other democracies around the world. But is the American way more or less efficacious than comparable democracies in Asia, Latin America, or Europe? What if the United States had a prime minister instead of (or in addition to) a president, or if it had three or more parties in Congress instead of two? Would there be more partisan animosity and legislative gridlock or less? These are the kinds of questions that thinking about U.S. government in comparative perspective helps us to analyze.

This valuable contribution to political studies takes a unique approach to a much-studied subject, looking at the U.S. government from a comparative point of view. Four distinguished scholars in the field examine the Constitution, the two-party system, the division of power between state and federal governments, and other major features of the American political system in terms of how they differ from other democracies, and they explore what those differences ultimately mean for democratic performance. By merging two important fields of study, American government and comparative political systems, this essential text offers a new and refreshingly insightful view of American exceptionalism.

Technical Calculus with Analytic Geometry (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Judith L. Gersting

This well-thought-out text, filled with many special features, is designed for a two-semester course in calculus for technology students with a background in college algebra and trigonometry. The author has taken special care to make the book appealing to students by providing motivating examples, facilitating an intuitive understanding of the underlying concepts involved, and by providing much opportunity to gain proficiency in techniques and skills.
Initial chapters cover functions and graphs, straight lines and conic sections, new coordinate systems, the derivative, using the derivative, integration and using the integral. The last four chapters focus on derivatives of transcendental functions, patterns for integrations, series expansion of functions, and differential equations.
Throughout, the writing style is clear, readable and informal. Examples are abundant and have complete worked solutions. Practice problems appear in the body of the text in each section; these are relatively easy and are intended to be worked by the student as soon as they are encountered. Each new type of example in the text is followed by a practice problem that allows the student to gain immediate reinforcement in applying the problem-solving technique illustrated by the example. Answers to all practice problems are given at the back of the book, many with worked-out solutions.
Other learning aids include the division of complex problem-solving processes into a series of step-by-step tasks, numerous exercises at the end of each section and a Status Check at the end of each chapter that helps students review what they have learned. Additional review exercises and a glossary, with definitions and page references, round out the book.

one of the best calculus books ever
By A. Cody Young
A wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and beginning differential equations on their own or to go back and fill in holes.

This book leaves you wishing you had seen it earlier in life. I found myself smacking my forehead at how simply and powerfully it implants information into the readers mind. So clearly written and fun to read that since the early 1990s when it came out I have gone through many copies by giving it away to students and friends who wanted to learn or become better at calculus and mathematics in their spare time (and with little time to spare). I got online to buy another copy and was surprised it had not yet been reviewed!

Every chapter starts with a succinct lesson and then jumps into many worked examples that build upon each other until the reader is dizzyingly skilled. Little cartoon owls give special insight and mnemonic phrases in key places. Each chapter ends with exercises and solutions to odd numbered problems.

This book is ideal for people who have even moderate skill at Algebra I/II. College level physicists, engineers, and other applied scientists will really enjoy this book.

Excellent, Friendly Text
By Dennis L. Hughes
I agree with the previous reviewer that it is surpising that no one else has reviewed this book. It's terrific.

I had two semesters of calculus about 15 years ago. I did very well, but I wanted to brush up. This book has been ideal. It covers the basics of analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus, and ends with a chapter on differential equations.

I believe it would also be ideal for someone trying to teach himself. It is very friendly, and there are _lots_ of problems: examples, practice problems, and exercises. Answers are given to all practice problems and odd-numbered exercises.

I sort of doubt I'm getting the depth or breadth of my two college semesters, but I think this is a solid and user-friendly place to start.

Finest Explaination of Calculus and Analytic Geometry!
By Avid Reader
I agree with the other reviews about this book. I've been out of school for many years yet I used this book to prepare for the math content found on the engineer-in-training exam and I passed. I wish when I took calculus the first time in school that the teacher used this book. Gersting not only explains the subject matter well but also provides clear examples. Add to this it is excellent as a self-study book. I recommend it for anyone wanting to review the subject and also as a reference for those struggling in a traditional calculus classes.

With Malice toward Some: Treason and Loyalty in the Civil War Era (Littlefield History of the Civil War Era), by William A. Blair

Few issues created greater consensus among Civil War-era northerners than the belief that the secessionists had committed treason. But as William A. Blair shows in this engaging history, the way politicians, soldiers, and civilians dealt with disloyalty varied widely. Citizens often moved more swiftly than federal agents in punishing traitors in their midst, forcing the government to rethink legal practices and definitions. In reconciling the northern contempt for treachery with a demonstrable record of judicial leniency toward the South, Blair illuminates the other ways that northerners punished perceived traitors, including confiscating slaves, arresting newspaper editors for expressions of free speech, and limiting voting. Ultimately, punishment for treason extended well beyond wartime and into the framework of Reconstruction policies, including the construction of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Establishing how treason was defined not just by the Lincoln administration, Congress, and the courts but also by the general public, Blair reveals the surprising implications for North and South alike.

This book makes a very important contribution to the scholarship on treason and disloyalty during the American Civil War and Reconstruction; it has wonderful new research while drawing on the latest literature; and it is a very good read.--Michael Vorenberg, Brown University

William Blair's With Malice toward Some represents a remarkably fresh contribution toward historians' understanding of treason and loyalty during the Civil War era. Highly original and deeply researched in heretofore neglected sources, Blair offers a elegantly written reinterpretation that operates at many levels, with many different actors, and with profound implications for the American constitutional system during wartime. A Great Work on Treason and Loyalty
By Matthew Bartlett
While a stream of books are released about the militaristic nature of the Civil War, there are only a handful which deal with the nature of politics in comparison. Those books on politics rarely deal with the subject of treason but now there is an explanation of the term and how it was used during the great conflict. William A. Blair’s With Malice Toward Some deals with the issue of treason and loyalties in the war and the difficulties which it presented. This book is not only a great reference for any Civil War Historian to have on their shelf, but it is a great explanation for those who have been confused about the legal status of treason and the ways in which it was combated during the Civil War.

William A. Blair is a professor of Liberal Arts Research on U.S. History at Pennsylvania State University. He is also the director of the Richards Civil War Era Center and is an editor for the Journal of the Civil War Era which is also published by the University of North Carolina Press. With Malice Toward Some is part of the Littlefield History of the Civil War Era, a sixteen volume series which offers a comprehensive narrative of this era in United States History.

For many who read about the American Civil War, the word treason is thrown around politically quite a bit, but the realization of the effects of the word are different in their meanings than just throwing someone in prison for their treasonous acts. Blair does an excellent job defining for the reader about the many types of treason in a flowing narrative which is quite easy to read. At some points, the reader may feel as though they are reading a law textbook. This should not stop anyone from reading this book, however, since it is one of the advantages of the work. In order to understand about the types of treason, legislative and judicial law must be explained. This type of detail to aid readers is why this book shines as a work on the political front of the Civil War. But beyond treason, he talks about loyalty from both the Union and Confederate side. The constant issues of compliance with the Loyalty Oaths made by certain members of Southern society were not complied with because less than ten percent of the state had not yet given the oath. Taking the Loyalty Oath also opened up the avenue for public ridicule and the status of a social pariah. Blair also spends a chapter on explaining the use and problems with the Provost Marshalls which has been a constant state of debate over the years since the war ended. In a narrative which felt like “who will police the police,” Blair realizes the danger which ensued over the military promoted citizens who felt above the law during the state of war. Blair also deals with politics in the military before 1863 when the Laws of War went into effect, written by Francis Lieber, a German who fled his country because of dangerous political change. The 1863 Laws of War changed many of the issues going on in the army at the time, though the officers and soldiers did not care for them immediately, found solace in their statements as the war went on. Blair concludes this massive undertaking with excellent appendices giving the reader a database of all Court-Martials for treason, disloyalty and Political Arrests Reported in the Newspapers. After reading some examples of treason which I remembered from my studies, I found myself constantly reading the appendices in attempts to see if that person was listed. Overall, after reading this book, there is a better understanding of the word treason and the fine lines which had to be walked before an arrest was made. One such example comes in maritime law dealing with the issues of Privateers. When the Confederacy hired privateers, the men pirating were doing so under the contract of the Confederacy. If the United States tried them, it would be an admittance that the men were under contract from another country therefore recognizing the Confederacy as a nation. It was a fascinating bit of information unknown to most Civil War readers.

I highly recommend this book to any Civil War reader who wishes to know more about the political spectrum of the Civil War. Not only was the narrative quite flowing and easy to read, but the information in the work is unmatched on the subject of treason and loyalty. The wealth of information in the book is so massive that it deserves to be on the bookshelf of any Civil War historian. With Malice Toward Some clarifies many of the issues within Civil War texts concerning arrests and issues of treason and loyalty all around the great conflict.

A well written and researched account of the distinction between loyalty/disloyalty during the Civil War era.
By David c. Keehn
A well written and researched account of the often nebulous distinction between loyalty and disloyalty during wartime. Focusing on the Civil War era era, this book looks at how loyalty/disloyalty was dealt with by federal and state governments as well as political parties and the general public. It is notable for its fresh perspectives, cogent explanations, and indepth research regarding previously unexplored topics. These include the unprecedented provost marshal system instituted in each Congressional District, the role of the military in Civil War politics, intimidation at the polls especially in the border states, and attempts to punish Confederates and the South generally during Reconstruction. It is well worth the time of anyone interested in these issues and makes a significant advance in Civil War scholarship.

By Wilbur Beauregard
This was very detailed and read more like a text book for a graduate level course on Civil War laws. What was interesting was all the political manuevering that went on during the war and how it played out in the background. There was a lot more than the great Confederate General heroes. The minutia made it hard to read. Still, I read it and enjoyed an aspect of the war I crave to know about because this is an aspect no one reads about or knows anything about.

Don't invest in this phamphlet
By Thinking investor
Don't make this investment mistake - this may be the worse investment article every written. There was no insight and no though given to this article. Most serious investors could do a better job explaining GARP off the cuff in 5 minutes at the office water cooler. The author doesn't have a clue, he mixes elements of value investing and income investing without providing any insight into GARP. Worst of all he really does not provide any realist structure to the investor struggling to develop a GARP based portfolio. If you want to read about GARP I suggest Phil Fisher's Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits. GARP is a great strategy, this author does it a huge disservice. Don't buy this article.

Wow, what a load of crap this book is! You can do yourself much better by spending this money on a nice cup of coffee instead of buying this pamphlet. The information provided is hardly the size of a small magazine article and very shalow. I am sure an Investopedia article has more meat in it.

“A triumph of storytelling. Henríquez pulls us into the lives of her characters with such mastery that we hang on to them just as fiercely as they hang on to one another and their dreams. This passionate, powerful novel will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

A boy and a girl who fall in love. Two families whose hopes collide with destiny. An extraordinary novel that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American.

Arturo and Alma Rivera have lived their whole lives in Mexico. One day, their beautiful fifteen-year-old daughter, Maribel, sustains a terrible injury, one that casts doubt on whether she’ll ever be the same. And so, leaving all they have behind, the Riveras come to America with a single dream: that in this country of great opportunity and resources, Maribel can get better.

When Mayor Toro, whose family is from Panama, sees Maribel in a Dollar Tree store, it is love at first sight. It’s also the beginning of a friendship between the Rivera and Toro families, whose web of guilt and love and responsibility is at this novel’s core.

Woven into their stories are the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America. Their journeys and their voices will inspire you, surprise you, and break your heart.

Suspenseful, wry and immediate, rich in spirit and humanity, The Book of Unknown Americans is a work of rare force and originality.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2014: Cristina Henríquez’s powerful novel The Book of Unknown Americans captures readers with the quiet beauty of her characters and their profoundly wrought experiences as immigrants in America. The story takes place in a run-down apartment building in Delaware, home to nine families who arrived in the States from various South and Central American countries, each looking to better the lives of the next generation. In alternating chapters, these men and women share stories of how their adopted country has left its mark on them, for better and worse. The close bond that develops between the Rivera and Toro families drives the novel forward, particularly the relationship between their children Mayor and Maribel, as closely held secrets and feelings of guilt, love, hope, and despair are unpacked with warmth and compassion. With her cast of “unknown Americans,” Henriquez has crafted a novel that is inspiring, tragic, brave, and above all, unforgettable. --Seira Wilson

From Booklist
*Starred Review* On a cold, bewildering night, the Riveras, who have just left their happy lives in Mexico, are dropped off at a dilapidated apartment building on the western edge of Delaware. Arturo has given up his thriving construction company to labor in a dark, grimy indoor mushroom farm, while his wife, Alma, lonely and afraid, with no English and little money, worries incessantly about their beautiful 15-year-old daughter, Maribel. She has suffered a traumatic brain injury, and her parents have sacrificed everything to send her to a special school. Their building turns out to be a sanctuary for Central and Latin American immigrants, and as the Riveras’ dramatic tale unfolds, Henríquez brings their generous neighbors forward to tell the compelling stories of why and how they left Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Paraguay. As one man says, “We are the unknown Americans,” those who are feared and hated. As Maribel opens up to Mayor, the infatuated boy next-door who is relentlessly bullied by his father and his classmates, terror of the unknown becomes a tragic force. Each scene, voice, misunderstanding, and alliance is beautifully realized and brimming with feeling in the acclaimed Henríquez’s (The World in Half, 2009) compassionately imagined, gently comedic, and profoundly wrenching novel of big dreams and crushing reality, courageous love and unfathomable heartbreak. --Donna Seaman

Review
“Timely . . . powerful . . . genuinely moving . . . a chronicle of a beautiful Mexican teenager named Maribel Rivera and her admiring friend and neighbor, Mayor Toro. Maribel and Mayor’s star-crossed love lends this novel an emotional urgency; the story of their families gives us a visceral sense of the magnetic allure of America, and the gaps so many immigrants find here between expectations and reality. In slowly revealing the back stories behind [their] arrival in America and what they have at stake in remaining here, Henríquez gives us an intimate understanding of the sense of dislocation they experience almost daily, belonging neither here nor there, caught on the margins of the past and the future. She conveys the homesickness they feel—missing not just family and friends but also the heat and light and rhythms of the places they left behind—and their awareness of the fragility of even their most ordinary dreams of safety. The story encapsulate[s] the promises and perils of the American dream . . . Henríquez’s myriad gifts as a writer shine.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Henríquez distills the vast sea of immigrant stories into a small apartment building community in Delaware. At the center are two star-crossed teens, Mayor and Maribel . . . Through their friendship and budding romance, Mayor becomes a hero, protecting Maribel from a dangerous boy. He starts to bring her out of her shell [and] Maribel begins to reconnect with her former self. Their doomed love is just one of the Romeo & Juliet twists in the book—Henríquez threads that theme through the relationships between parents and their children, husbands and wives, the immigrant community with their home countries and their new one . . . Through her unadorned prose, these struggles ring clear, voices rising above the din of political debate.” —Korina Lopez, USA Today

“Gripping . . . genuinely devastating. Henríquez has found a memorable way to open up complex topics—discrimination, love and grief in family life, and the experiences of being displaced or feeling at home. A novel that can both make you think and break your heart.” —Sarah Stone, San Francisco Chronicle

“Reminiscent of the chorus of voices that made Oscar Lewis’s The Children of Sanchez so memorable, and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things so profoundly humane, Henriquez’s tale about coming to America is a striking original . . . It’s no easy trick to pull a good story from the classic immigrant chronicle, the striver’s tale. But this novel about the Riveras and their hastily cobbled world is sure to bring Henriquez many readers. It is a deeply stirring story about a budding romance between two unlikely lovers, but also a ringing paean to love in general: to the love between man and wife, parent and child, outsider and newcomer, pilgrims and promised land. With a simple, unadorned prose that rises to the level of poetry, Henríquez achieves the seemingly impossible: Without a trace of sentimentality, without an iota of self-indulgence or dogma, she tells us about coming to America. The Book of Unknown Americans leaves you in thrall to its vivid characters and its author’s sure hand.” —Marie Arana, The Washington Post

“In a TED talk titled ‘The Danger of a Single Story,” Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie noted that ‘the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.’ Henríquez’s big-hearted novel challenges the ‘single story’ by exploring a wide range of Latino experiences. The Book of Unknown Americans is a welcome contribution to a broadening literary conversation that features immigrants from all across the Americas, and all walks of life. As Henríquez shows, theirs is a story composed of many stories.” —Ashley Hope Pérez, Texas Observer

“There’s an aura of benevolence in these pages that feels honestly come by, stemming in part from Mayor and Maribel’s innocent romance but mostly from the steady support and encouragement among the families—the charismatic residents of the Redwood Apartments in Delaware. ‘Who comes to the U.S. and ends up in Delaware?’, one [character] jokingly wonders . . . Henríquez’s feat is to make the reader feel at home amid these good, likeable people. Be warned: The price of this closeness is the book’s tragic conclusion.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Textured, resonant . . . rich, human. The Book of Unknown Americans ramps up like a rainstorm then releases across the landscape, and once you look outside, touches absolutely everything. It is a graceful examination of the American immigrant experience from the oft overlooked perspective of the immigrant herself . . . It’s easy to become lost in the young love story, [but] Alma’s parenting checks readers back into the fear and newness inherent in life on unfamiliar turf, with the inability to communicate . . . The novel’s last line is bone-chilling. A secret peek into lives—an unknown life—to which we are not often privy. To walk away without learning something from its pages—most of all, empathy—would be an opportunity squandered. But leave it to the feeling in your chest on your chest when you reach the last page to tell you that.” —Meredith Turits, Bustle (June fiction pick)

“I didn’t want to read another book about the immigrant experience. So ubiquitous in literature, the theme can feel tired and unoriginal, even to those of us who’ve lived it. But the first few paragraphs of Henríquez’s prose—words whose simplicity belies their weight—seduced me with beauty and the promise of a rich tale. And Henríquez delivered. This is a book about love, about how we seek to help those we love, sometimes with unforeseen and tragic consequences . . . Henríquez ignites the tension in the first few pages and lets it simmer and pull the story along . . . Lyrical . . . There is beautiful writing in these pages [that] illustrates the full ethnic range of the Americas and how so many people south of our border ended up here. I’m not spoiling it to say that Henríquez brings the story to a heart-crushing explosion of an end fueled by secrets, love, fear and ethnic tension. Bottom line, if you read only one more book about the immigrant experience, make it this one.” —Beatriz Terrazas, Dallas Morning News

“Observant . . . a bighearted ensemble of a story. Set at a scrappy apartment complex in Delaware, The Book of Unknown Americans is a pan-Latino novel, with characters from Panama, Venezuela, Mexico and Puerto Rico, among other nations. In love and locked out of any reasonably cool social scene in high school, Mayor Toro and Maribel Rivera are the teens at the heart of the novel. Interspersed among their tentative, fumbling love story are chapters devoted to the back stories of the other residents of the complex. Henríquez covers the gamut of the immigrant experience: how they arrived in America, why they came, what they think of their new home, whether they miss their first home. In other words, she captures an experience at the heart of this country’s history that is often a cursory, incomplete story in the media . . . Poor and at the mercy of forces they do not entirely understand, her characters nonetheless experience victories that no one but their families and the fellow residents of their complex share. ‘I hope this book can play a small role in maybe opening Americans a bit more to empathy,’ Henriquez says.” —Claiborne Smith, Kirkus

“Remarkable . . . the narrative of our two central families could easily sustain the novel, but Henríquez has taken it further. The Book of Unknown Americans gives voice to an entire society of people who struggle and work for the hope of better lives—but these lives don't necessarily turn out as they may have dreamed. These people live days steeped in uncertainty and sometimes fear, and the sacrifices that are made in a move toward a better lot in life are huge. Henriquez opens the doors to this experience. Amid the grit and shadows, doubt and desperation, Henríquez finds beauty in community, in love, in family, in perseverance. And lucky us—we have the beauty, too, that is Henríquez’s writing.” —Kristin Fritz, Everyday eBook

“With eloquence, grace and, yes, sorrow, Henríquez creates an ensemble cast that speaks for millions of people who live among us but whose voices are rarely heard. This is a remarkable novel that every American should read.” —Meganne Fabrega, Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Enrapturing and heartbreaking . . . a stunning cross-cultural love story under the guise of a narrative about Latino families trying to make their way in America . . . Like a music master at the harp, Henriquez elegantly plays with human heart strings as she illustrates the complexities of the immigrant experience through the story of two families, as well as the company with whom they surround themselves.” —Morgan Ribera, Bustle

“The stories you hear about immigration are the ones that generate sensational headlines: sheriffs patrolling the border with shotguns, finger-pointing on Fox News, red-hot rhetoric in political campaigns across the country. But as Henríquez was reminded a few years ago, there are plenty of stories that are told rarely, if ever . . . At the center of The Book of Unknown Americans are Arturo and Alma Rivera, who have immigrated legally from Mexico to enroll their daughter in a special-needs school because she has suffered a brain injury. When Mayor Toro, a young naturalized citizen originally from Panama, falls in love with her, the Rivera and Toro families become forever intertwined . . . The Riveras’ vulnerability increases [and] ultimately the story spins toward tragedy. Along the way, Henríquez allows the characters to speak for themselves . . . The politics of immigration, while never explicitly argued, remain subtly in play, as do more existential matters affecting immigrants, such as mixed national and cultural allegiances and affiliations between the generations . . . Henríquez’s most ambitious book yet.” —Kevin Nance, Chicago Tribune

“A novel told in many voices of Latin American people who come to this country and live in one apartment building in Delaware: a book about the love affairs and various things that go on—but it’s really about what it means to be an American, and what it means to have come here—what it cost them and what you get.” —Sara Nelson, on CBS This Morning, Amazon’s “Must-Have Titles for Your Summer Reading List”

“Henríquez’s best yet . . . The notion of home—where we make it, how we define it, and why we leave it—lies at the heart of The Book of Unknown Americans. Gut-wrenching.” —Rachel Bertsche, Chicago Magazine

“Poignant and profound . . . Beautiful, heartbreaking, hopeful and enlightening. Each character in The Book of Unknown Americans tells their story of how they came to America. How much they wanted to become part of this wonderful country with so many opportunities . . . Little did they know that leaving Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Panama, Guatemala or Nicaragua, each with their own unique heritage, food, language and culture, they would all be lumped together as a group of immigrants that were not welcomed or wanted. [But] these strangers soon became friends, something of a newly established family . . . Candid, thoughtful . . . This book had to be written. And needs to be read. A copy should show up on each politician’s desk, teacher’s desk, in each American citizen’s hands.” —Marisa Robinson, The Daily Dosage

“A novel crowded with characters as vivid as they are resilient—families and neighbors who have bravely chosen hope over fate. The Book of Unknown Americans begins with a vivid vision of promise. [But] Hollywood hopes sink like L.A. smog when Alma Rivera, her husband, Arturo, and their daughter wind up in a dingy apartment with found furniture, and Arturo, who owned a construction firm in Mexico, finds work as a mushroom picker. The Riveras come seeking better care for their daughter, Maribel, but they find camaraderie and destiny in their apartment complex, which teems with other immigrant clans—such as the Panamanian Toro family, whose gawky son, Mayor, falls hard for Maribel. Their collective story is interlaced with tales of dreams deferred from the other tenants, [including] a Puerto Rican dancer who could well be a proxy for anyone from far away with an American-size appetite to dream.” —Jennifer Arellano, Elle

“A novel as disturbing as it is beautiful: a testament to the mixed blessings our country offers immigrants, who struggle against bigotry and economic hardship while maintaining just enough hope to keep striving for something better. A narrative mosaic that moves toward a heartrending conclusion.” —Daniel A. Olivas, The Los Angeles Review of Books

“Passionate . . . Henríquez imagines the sweet—and bitter—reality of coming to America, giv[ing] voice to the unheard stories of people who have quit their native countries for what they hope will be a better life. Alternating points of view bring to life nine families living in an apartment building in Delaware who have fled their birthplaces—dusty towns in Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Paraguay—to begin anew in the States . . . The Riveras arrive at dusk, unfolding themselves from the back of a red pickup truck after a days-long journey from Mexico. They are here legally, desperately hoping that an American school will restore their daughter, Maribel, who has suffered a traumatic brain injury, to the outgoing girl she used to be . . . The Toros offer their new neighbors friendship; their son, Mayor, is smitten with Maribel from the moment they meet. As the novel unfolds, the two share a tender love. Through her characters’ fears, their robust affection for one another, and their resilience, Henríquez illuminates the disparity between the lives they’ve given up and the benefits they’ve gained. For some, the struggle to find new identities as Americans yields rewards; for others, the transition is too difficult, and they return home the way they came: ‘out of one world and into the next.’” —Abbe Wright, O, The Oprah Magazine

“Henríquez borrows both the epic scope and the immediacy of oral history in The Book of Unknown Americans, taking readers inside the private anxieties of immigrants—strangers in a strange land. The final crashing together of all the [story’s] forces is devastating, as is the deftness with which Henriquez handles both the dramatic conclusion and the aftershocks. (Yes, I cried.) The book’s structure contributes greatly to the emotional impact: Hearing the stories told in Alma's and Mayor's own voices brings us inextricably close to them. Dividing their tales is a chorus of voices in which other inhabitants of the building tell their stories. The effect is that of both bridge and ballast: the stories enrich the experience with their depictions of the delicate line between heartache and triumph. Henríquez is a world-class stylist.” —Jonathan Messinger, Chicago Reader

“On a cold, bewildering night, the Riveras, who have just left their happy lives in Mexico, are dropped off at a dilapidated apartment building [in] Delaware. Alma Rivera worries about their beautiful 15-year-old daughter, Maribel, who has suffered a brain injury; her parents have sacrificed everything to send her to a special school. Their building turns out to be a sanctuary; as the Riveras’ dramatic tale unfolds, Henríquez brings their generous neighbors forward to tell the compelling stories of why and how they left Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Paraguay. As one man says, ‘We are the unknown Americans,’ those who are feared and hated. As Maribel opens up to the infatuated boy next-door, terror of the unknown becomes a tragic force. Each scene, voice, misunderstanding, and alliance is beautifully realized and brimming with feeling in the acclaimed Henríquez’s compassionately imagined, gently comedic, and profoundly wrenching novel of big dreams and crushing reality, courageous love and unfathomable heartbreak.” —Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred)

“Evoking a profound sense of hope, Henríquez delivers a moving account of those who will do anything to build a future for their children—even if it means confronting the fear and alienation lurking behind the American dream.” —Publishers Weekly

“Distinctively compassionate and original—a moving portrait of people who often pass before our eyes under a veil of invisibility. Gorgeously woven of both hope and delusion, and of the many kinds of love, this is a novel in which characters’ assimilations and aspirations are as much to a new country as to something even broader: to other, finer versions of themselves. As a reader I felt assimilated too, forever altered by the extraordinary world Henríquez creates.” —Heidi Julavits, author of The Vanishings

“Spectacular . . . highly believable and poignant . . . A well-written story set among ‘unknown Americans,’ ostensibly Hispanic but in many ways any family adjusting to a new culture and way of life, regardless of ethnicity.” —Lawrence Olszewski, Library Journal

“Cristina Henríquez has written an exquisite and profound novel of love, longing, and the resilience of the human spirit. Her characters may be invisible souls on the American landscape, but their stories leave an indelible mark on the heart.” —Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove

“The Book of Unknown Americans is filled with the fiercest kinds of love—of a boy for a beautiful girl, of stricken parents for an injured daughter, of an immigrant community for an impossible America. In this powerful novel, Cristina Henríquez gives us unforgettable characters, whose destinies are shaped by forces—senseless, random, political—far beyond their control, and yet whose resilience yields a most profound and unexpected kind of beauty.” —Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being

“Wonderful. If most novels, or at least most good ones, are songs, then The Book of Unknown Americans is a choir. In a multiplicity of voices, each one distinct and authentic, Cristina Henríquez tells a whole community of stories, and the book that emerges is warm, wise, and unfailingly generous. It never seems to strive for profundity or grasp at poignancy, and yet page by page, as naturally as can be, it rouses the conscience and touches the heart.” —Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Brief History of the Dead and The Illumination

“Here is an important story about family, community and identity, told with elegance and compassion. The Book of Unknown Americans is unforgettable.” —Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins

“Some of the characters in The Book of Unknown Americans were born in the United States, others came as adults or were brought here from Central and South America. Their stories speak to us, involve us in their lives. They dream, meet challenges, and dare to live on hope. Sometimes they cry, but they also laugh, dance, make love. In this beautiful book, Cristina Henríquez introduces us to their vibrant lives, to heartbreaking choices, to the tender beginnings of love, and to the humanity in every individual. Unforgettable.” —Esmeralda Santiago, author of When I Was Puerto Rican and Conquistadora

“Cristina Henríquez’s novel is a triumph not just of storytelling, but of American storytelling, a novel whose breadth and power blow open any traditional definition of ‘American.’ Henríquez pulls us into the lives of her characters with such mastery that we hang onto them just as fiercely as they hang onto one another, and their dreams. This passionate, powerful novel will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

Important new story about immigrants in America
By Susan Blumberg-Kason
Reminiscent of Jean Kwok's "Girl in Translation", Cristina Henriquez's new novel is a powerful and compelling story of the contemporary American experience. The main characters, Alma, Arturo, and Maribel Rivera, move to Delaware in order to seek special education for teenage Maribel after she suffers a tragic accident in their hometown in Mexico. They move into an apartment building where they meet other Spanish-speaking immigrants from Venezuela to Puerto Rico to Panama, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The families in this story struggle with issues that other Americans never think about: maintaining visa status, finding jobs, feeding their families, fearing racial profiling by the police, and trying to ward off bullies who don't accept them as Americans. The main story centers around Maribel and her friendship with Mayor, a teenage boy in her building.

I love the structure of the story, which is told mainly through the point of view of Alma and Mayor, but also from half a dozen other characters who play more of a supporting role. I found that these different voices just added to the richness of the story.

Although this book is adult literary fiction, it's also a must-read for teenagers and other young adults.

The Failed American Dream
By Jill I. Shtulman
Gosh, it's hard to say anything critical about a novel that focuses on the unknown Americans -- the recent immigrants -- who come to this country with hopes and dreams, only to find that life is not the fairytale they anticipated. It's a worthy topic to read about, especially with the demonizing of immigrants through certain media. And Cristina Henriquez is a fluid writer with an easy-to-read style; she know her craft and she definitely is good at what she does.

The thing is, it just seemed a bit too YA for me. Now, there's nothing wrong with young adult literature. In fact, some of it is quite nuanced (as is this one). But I wanted something more. I wanted an immigrant story such as ones I've read by Junot Diaz, Dinaw Mengestu, or Kiran Desai, to name three. In other words, less a story and more of an explorative journey.

For what it is, this book is good. It focuses mainly on a teenager from Panama, Mayor, who falls in love with Maribel, a brain-damaged 15-year-old whose family hails from Mexico. Punctuating the forward thrust of this star-crossed tale are stories from other Latino immigrants from Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and, in fact, all across Central and Latin America. My one criticism is that there is not a strong differentiation of voices.

Book reviews are personal. I would never discourage anyone from reading this book, which admittedly, is quite good. This is just one person's reaction.

"let us all be from somewhere. Let us tell each other everything we can."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
Maribel's life has been cut short of the promise of her childhood. In traveling to Delaware, her parents are determined to restore all of the promise robbed by an accident one sunny day. They are not the usual people of the American dream, they had loved their life in Mexico. Just so their friends had left Panama under threat, but miss its smells and rhythms.
I love the story of Mayor who sees the person the Mirabel remains and treasures her for her quiet attention to him and his world. Their relationship sets a type of frame for the lives of the families as they attempt to be the best of unknown Americans.

This is a novel of unlovely places made dear by the attention and intent of those who live within them. I find it quiet in scope, but not slow and not picky. Shining moments are let to shine without fanfare or hyperbole. I just really liked the style of this prose. Many moments break your heart, but they are of a piece with life. I find the book a lovely and important look at a corner of the world.
