High level introduction to addressing Big Data in the enterprise

While at first glance potential readers might see this white paper sized text as overlapping with another recent O'Reilly Radar Team publication, "Big Data Now: Current Perspectives from O'Reilly Radar", this work is really intended to focus on what Big Data is all about, why it matters, and where to get started, whereas the earlier text covered a much broader spectrum of Big Data related material. In addition, while management is part of the target audience for both, the earlier text is also more technical in the sense that it gets down to programmatic levels in a few places, and also discusses technology stacks that this book does not cover.

After a discussion of how a company collects, analyzes, and acts on data, and a walk through different aspects of Big Data, the editors shift the discussion to a very high level overview of the Apache Hadoop ecosystem, followed by a Big Data market survey somewhat akin to what one might find from Gartner that focuses on enterprise software vendor distributions of Hadoop, Big Data cloud platforms, and data markets, and brief entries on the NoSQL movement, data visualization, and O'Reilly Radar Team expections from the Big Data landscape over the coming year.

Readers are gently led through the current Big Data landscape. For example, as the author of the second chapter states, "Big data is data that exceeds the processing capacity of conventional database systems. The data is too big, moves too fast, or doesn't fit the structures of your database architectures. To gain value from this data, you must choose an alternative way to process it. The hot IT buzzword of 2012, big data has become viable as cost-effective approaches have emerged to tame the volume, velocity, and variability of massive data. Within this data lie valuable patterns and information, previously hidden because of the amount of work required to extract them."

Although this book contains different material than "Big Data Now: Current Perspectives from O'Reilly Radar", as a consultant I think technical audiences new to this space will prefer this earlier work. In addition, it is rather apparent that "Planning for Big Data: A CIO's Handbook to the Changing Data Landscape" emphasizes commericalized open source products, and does not cover tooling outside of the Hadoop ecosystem to any great extent. While this book is 25% shorter, and is understandably targeted at senior management, many potential readers will likely appreciate the more extensive coverage of this space in the earlier text.

Excellent introduction to big data and the logistics of data science

I do a lot of work in IT operations, business analysis, and HR consulting. The past year or so, I've seen a rapid increase in data science jobs and general excitement around big data. A couple weeks ago, the American Psychological Association ran a story about firms hiring business psychologists to join data science teams. So this seems to be a hot area and the "hype" represents not a temporary blip but a genuine trend that will continue to strengthen.

What I like about this book is the ease of reading it. I have not done any work with big data but I understood everything I read. The book covers all the major companies offering services for data scientists and administrators of systems that process big data. I feel current with my knowledge since the book was written in 2011-2012 from what I can tell.

Overall, I'd say the impressive thing about this book is the quality writing and the authors' collective ability to engage a reader who is not working in big data yet, but wants to.

A decent high-level view into the world of big data.

Planning for big data gives a 50000 foot view into the world of big data and data science. It is perfect for the big data newbie and the author even says if you're already working with big data you should give the book to a friend. I found it be a easy read that didn't take longer than 3 or 4 hours.

The author glosses over the main areas of big data and provides almost a list of relevant technologies and services. After reading this book you can get a small glimpse of how large the big data world is.

Then author begins with why organizations are interested in big data and analyzing their data as quickly as possible. Then we're introduced to some of the technologies that make it possible, such as Hadoop.

Cloud computing is a big player in big data and the author gives great comparisons of the main cloud providers, specifically amazon Google and Microsoft. It was very useful to have a side by side comparison of the services and the features they offer.

The author also lists out many of the nosql solutions available and why a nosql solution can be beneficial for big data. He emphasizes an agile approach and how nosql allows developers to easily build on existing structure and how it helps to scale horizontally.

And the last main piece that is mentioned is the importance of visualizations that are interactive and that can communicate complex ideas, as the author puts it, these are different than the normal boring bar graphs and charts put into slide presentations.

In summary I felt Planning for Big Data was a great starting point for someone who's beginning to explore the world of big data and it might even be useful for someone who is a little more familiar with big data to use as a reference of other tools and services that are available.

Empty of clear content (sadly)

I am not exactly sure what I just read. The language was good, the writing was like a 40-something page prose poem. I have read "the coming insurrection" and I suppose I expected more of the same but this was not it.

I think they are advocating some sort of anarcho-primitivist revolution but I cannot be sure. I did enjoy some of the content quite a bit and their criticism of the "activist" culture of the left was right on target.

Oh well, they can't all be winners. Not a bad read, overall, but very scattered.

About the Author

Zhijun Li is a professor in the College of Automation Science and Engineering at the South China University of Technology. Dr. Li is an IEEE Senior Member. He is an editor of the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems. His current research interests include adaptive/robust control, mobile manipulators, and nonholonomic systems.

Shuzhi Sam Ge is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Social Robotics Laboratory, Interactive Digital Media Institute, at the National University of Singapore, and director of the Robotics Institute at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu. He has co-authored five books and published more than 300 international journal and conference papers. He has been an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and is currently an associate editor for Automatica, as well as an editor for International Journal of Social Robotics, International Journal of Control, Automation & Systems, and the Taylor & Francis Automation and Control Engineering Series. About the Author
Sergio Gandolfo is Full Professor of Dentistry at the University of Turin, School of Medicine S. Luigi Gonzaga. He earned his medical degree in 1977 and completed postgraduate training in stomatology (1980) and medical oncology (1983) at the University of Turin. Currently, Professor Gandolfo is Head of the Department of Dentistry at the S. Luigi University Hospital, Orbassano, Turin, and is also Dean of the Postgraduate School in Oral Surgery and the Master in Oral Medicine and Special Needs Care at the University of Torino. From 2005 to 2008 he was Dean of the Degree Course in Oral Hygiene (University of Torino).

Professor Gandolfo is past-President and founding fellow of the Italian Society of Oral Pathology and Medicine (SIPMO), and a member of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO), the International Association of Oral Pathologist (IAOP) and the European Academy of Oral Medicine (EAOM). He currently serves on the Scientific Committee of the Association for Prevention and Care of Cancer in Piedmont.

Crispian Scully is a Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Oral Health-General Health; and is emeritus Professor at UCL. He is Co-Editor of Oral Diseases, Medicina Oral, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry.

Crispian Scully is Past-President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, European Association of Oral Medicine, British Society for Oral Medicine and British Society of Disability and Oral Health, he has served as Dean in Bristol and UCL; on the General Dental Council; on the Councils of the Royals colleges in Glasgow and Edinburgh; and on committees of NICE and CRUK, He has written and edited over 45 books, written over 150 book chapters and has over 1000 papers cited on MEDLINE. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, University of Granada Medal, Fellowship of UCL, and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada, Helsinki and Pretoria. He has received the UK Dental Award for the Most Outstanding Achievements in Dentistry, the Awards of the Spanish Society for Oral Medicine and the Hellenic Society for Oral Medicine, and the International Award of the Spanish Society for Oral Surgery.

Marco Carrozzo is Professor of Oral Medicine, School of Dental Sciences and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine, RVI Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Marco graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Turin, Italy, and specialized in odontostomatology, becoming researcher and Consultant in Oral Medicine at the University of Turin. He is author and co-author of over 180 scientific publications including several papers on oral cancer and potentially malignant diseases and of three books and nine book chapters on oral medicine. Good for Star Wars fans

This was a great way to maintain my son's motivation to keep learning violin. He is now trying to master all of his favorite Star Wars songs. The music is a little complex for him, but he is breaking it down with his teacher's help and is far more excited to play the Imperial March than he ever was to play "Lightly Row."

I bought this after reading the 8 reviews here. I agree with most of them, including the detachable violin book. My 8-year-old is doing violin, but hasn't quite gotten the incentive to play to this book yet. My 4-year-old, who isn't taking any music lessons, loves to listen to the CD.

But what I didn't expect was the lifeless accompaniments. The lead violin part is played satisfactorily by a real violinist with expression and tasteful vibrato. However, the background symphonic music has irritatingly fake horns, woodwinds and other instruments that are obviously done on a synth or computer. They are so hollow and robotic that I wonder if they were MIDI tracks played back on a computer and not even played by a real person on a real synth. They must not have had the budget to hire a real orchestra to record those tracks in a real studio.

Update: I forgot to mention that like another reviewer, my CD also has the clicking noises on tracks 25, and 28 through to the last track. It's extremely annoying, as one of the affected tracks is the Cantina piece that my daughter enjoys. This tells me that their CD master has the defect, and they haven't fixed it. I downgraded my rating from 4 stars to 2 stars because of this.

Starved Wars

As a thirty-eight year old, the Star Wars franchise has been an essential part of my life both as a child and as an adult so I was very excited to see that a product like this even existed.

About a week before I purchased this, I had purchased the Lord of the Rings product that was just like this (included the full music, violin music only, and the CD that had tracks with and without the violin part). That product was outstanding and I really enjoyed it so I anticipated receiving this very much.

Unfortunately, it is not nearly as good.

First and foremost, the quality of the audio on the CD is horrible. This was a brand-new item but the CD was making a skipping/ticking noise (this was even true when I tried to rip it to my computer so I could simply use my mp3 player to plug into my receiver to play). But what was even worse than that is most of the background orchestra is not a real orchestra for the most part. There are some very bad keyboard/electronic sounds being used for brass and woodwind parts that are extremely outdated. This was really a let down for me as the Lord of the Rings background music was the actual orchestra and sounds amazing. Honestly, some of the sounds they used are laughable and sound like MIDI sounds off of an old computer.

Finally, as you can see, there tends to be quite a few more songs from the newer films (parts 1-3) and not very much from the classics. This was disappointing as I feel they really left out some decent themes from the classic films and the ones they did include were not such a great sampling (seriously, the cantina song on a violin? meh).

I'm keeping this at two stars only because the music seems accurate and is enjoyable to play on its own. However, this product lacks the fun that I have with the Lord of the Rings version.

The "level" for this book says 2-3 and I would agree with that. There are some difficult pieces and although there aren't any unusual/difficult keys, there are a multitude of challenging rhythms and accidentals.

Sorry to say that this product did not really live up to the quality it should or could have. I didn't mind paying a little extra for this product compared to similar products (presumably because it said "Star Wars" on it), but it should have delivered more than a let down for that premium.
