Howard Marks is chairman and cofounder of Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based investment firm with seventy-five billion dollars under management. He holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the Wharton School and an MBA in accounting and marketing from the University of Chicago. He is the author of The Most Important Thing: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor.

Bruce C. Greenwald holds the Robert Heilbrunn Professorship of Finance and Asset Management at Columbia Business School and is the academic director of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing. This book can save you from yourself when investing

Each year, there are hundreds of books written on the subject of stock market investing. Most of them are not worth the investment of one's time or money. Every once in a while, a new classic hits the market. This book is one of those new classics on investment writing.
Howard Marks, Chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, writes clearly and persuasively about the importance of risk avoidance when investing in stocks. He emphatically states his belief that risk avoidance by buying at a good value is the key to success. He then spends the rest of the book telling the reader the 18 most important things to consider when buying stocks. His discussion of investor psychology is worth the price of the book by itself. Everything else is a bonus.
I had been meaning to read this book for a year or so. When I learned that an annotated edition, with comments from some leading value investors, I grabbed it. I took my time reading it, as there is so much great information within. The final chapter, in which Marks pulls all 18 important things together, is now something I intend to re-read several times a year, like I do with Chapters 8 and 20 of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor.
Highly recommended.

A Classic Made Even Better

I have to say I was very excited to learn that this new edition was going to be released as I found the first edition of his book to be a seminal investing work, one that deserves to be on the same shelf as The Intelligent Investor, Security Analysis, Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits, and the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters.

I was not disappointed when I read my review copy. I found that the annotated comments highlighted important sections in the text while also providing additional compelling perspectives but yet didn't get in the way of the flow of the book.

Don't just take my word on this, here are a few examples:

p. 58: Howard Marks: Understanding uncertainly: Dimson's formulation reminds us of a very simple concept: that many things are possible in the future. We can't know which of the possibilities will occur, and this uncertainty contributes to the challenge of investing. "Single scenario" investors ignore this fact, oversimplify the task, and need fortuitous outcomes to produce good results.

p. 104: Seth Klarman: Even the best investors judge themselves on the basis of return. It would be hard to evaluate yourself on risk, since risk cannot be measured. Apparently, the risk-averse managers of this endowment were disappointed with their relative returns even though their risk adjusted performance was likely excellent, as borne out by their performance over the following three years. This highlights just how hard it is to maintain conviction over the long run when short-term performance is considered poor.

Please allow me to make one additional comment on the annotations before I discuss the new chapter. I was not familiar with Mr. Johnson before reading his collection of annotations in the book but I found them insightful and thought provoking. I wish my college career had included being a student in his classes. You can find more information on him at this site: [...].

The new chapter is called Reasonable Expectations. This chapter develops the theme that investors need to keep their expectations grounded in reality to guard themselves from overreaching and thus taking on far more risk than is reasonable. Mr. Marks cautions his readers that one can never know when the exact right time to make a purchase is. Focus on buying it when its trading at below your estimate of value with the understanding that if its gets cheaper you will buy more as the price declines. The point is not to become despondent if a stock declines after your purchase it because being able to catch the absolute button is nearly impossible.

Here is a quote from this chapter in which Mr. Marks is telling his readers how an investor should have been thinking in the dark period of 2007-2009:

"I need 8 percent. I'd be glad to earn 10 percent instead. Twelve percent would be even better. But I won't try for more than that, because doing so would entail risks I'm just not willing to bear. I don't need 20 percent."

I find that comment particularly interesting when you consider that Mr. Buffett has spoken on the record many times that he looks for investments that can earn him 15%.

In conclusion I certainly think the chapter is a valuable addition to the book. This new material, along with the added annotations, make the new edition a worthwhile purchase. All in all this new edition does the nearly impossible, it takes an already classic text and makes it an even more indispensable tool for investors!

Great Book - annoying commentaries

Howard Marks is one of the great investment thinkers. This book provides tremendous insight into the nature of risk and return. For example, higher prices mean both lower expected returns and higher risk (which is counter to Modern Portfolio theory).

Unfortunately, I found the comments in the "illuminated" version distracting. There were some insightful comments (mostly from Marks himself) but they were inserted into the middle of the chapters. I would prefer to have the comments at the end so I could keep my stream of thought.

I would probably recommend the un-illuminated version.

BROKEN in Mac OS X Lion - BEWARE

I have both this video dictionary as well as the one from NTID/RIT. Upon getting a new Mac that has Lion, both were broken due to the discontinuation of support for PowerPC binaries in Lion. I wrote NTID and Gallaudet both, and NTID supplied the newest version free and it worked. Gallaudet responded that they have no plans to update the dictionary. I reminded them that their campus is FULL of Macs...

One star for it being broken in Lion as a warning for others. The book and the dictionary are both wonderful otherwise, and are a great addition to your collection! I just hope they issue a new version that is Mac-compatible.

Help for ASL Students

I have been taking American Sign Language classes for almost two years now. Many of the "book" dictionaries try to illustrate the proper motions and facial expressions for ASL signs, but trying to show these signs in static two-dimensional images, even with descriptions, left me uncertain in many cases. I did use some online dictionaries that demonstrated ASL signs with video clips, but the online dictionaries I found did not provide an extensive number of signs. The DVD with the Gallaudet Dictionary of American Sign Language is outstanding! By typing in the sign you want to see, you can jump directly to a video demonstration for that sign (for more than 3,000 signs). The DVD, like the written portion of the dictionary, is also more up to date than many other ASL dictionaries. When you cannot practice ASL signs with others, observing video clips is the next best thing. This DVD dictionary is an excellent aid.

An excellent recourse for someone learning sign language or someone who is fluent in sign language. I speak sign language fluently. I had taken interpreting courses in the process of learning so I could move into interpreting if I chose to. This book is a must have for anyone learning or using sign language. It is an excellent resource. The DVD makes it an invaluable resource. If you cannot quite understand the signing with the pictures alone the DVD provides a person signing the sign. Mac or PC, no problem. If you are using Linux, there may be an issue. The disc only works in a computer, not a DVD drive.

This text provides a good starting point. More focus on memorization of "facts" with some practical real world application. Could have a better focus on implementation methodologies. For the most part clear and concise. An easy read. Fine for a quarter based college intro to HR class. The apsiring HR maven would need additional materials including better training in methods of application/implementation. Better than most texts in this area

Philip Jodidio's Taschen publications was much better.

Contrary to all previous Philip Jodidio's superb books published by Taschen Publishing, this edition by Image Publishing per my opinion is downgrade. The quality of prints and the paper are average and not superb as in Taschen Publications. The Book is informative but not extraordinary and impressive as Automobile Architecture book by Braun Publishing. The price is too expensive for the book of this caliber. Book is relatively small in size 9.5"x10.5"x1".

Phenomenal!!! Five Stars!!

I loved this book/series! From the very first page it pulls you in and it keeps you turning pages, wanting to know what happens to the characters. The way Timberlyn Scott unfolds the story is amazing, if you love a great love story this one is for you! I will be recommending this to my friends! Sebastian and Payton's story will leave you longing for what they have found.

There is only one negative comment to be made, and there is only one, so let me emphasize by saying, it has NOTHING to do with the writing or the story in any way! Unhinged is not a complete, stand-alone book! You have to purchase all of the books in Sebastian's and Payton's story before you get to the end! Waiting weeks between the next installment. If you are anything like me and HATE cliff hangers or having to wait for the end of a book and another release date, then I would recommend you wait until ALL of the books in this particular story are completed and Ms. Scott finishes Sebastian and Payton's main story! I would have preferred to pay FULL PRICE and had the book complete from start to finish. Or at least been told up front that this was not a stand-alone so I could have waited for the book in it's entirety. I have noticed that some E-book authors have been doing this and it's not something I am a fan of. Not sure what the attraction to this form of distribution is, BUT, AGAIN, this series is wonderful and I would wholly recommend it!

Great debut by a new author, I was left Un-F'ing-Hinged after reading it! (no spoilers)

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great start to a series.
Payton is a young woman beginning her career at a big company, I was interested in her story from the beginning. I could imagine her interactions with her new boss and her friends. She was dreaming about this guy, it was interesting how he pulled at her. Who is he and why is she dreaming about him?
Sebastian is a bad boy with secrets and a past. He spends his days working on cars and he seems brilliant at what he does. My least favorite book by far, and that says quite a lot as I have loved most of her books. I can't say that I enjoyed anything about this book. Payton annoyed me, a lot. I kept waiting for her to get out of her head a bit but, no, she stayed in this alternate reality that honestly doesn't exist for most 25 year old people I know. I tried to like Sebastian but I didn't get to know him enough to want to read the rest of the series. I love a good bad boy, but he just wasn't enough to draw me in. I got the impression this book was written for a much younger crowd, and if so, then market it as such! I will not continue with this series!

Bad typeset throughout entire book.

The book is popular water technology text, however the particular copy I received has widespread typeset problems with it. Meaning that letters are missing in words or words are combined and separated. This makes it hard to read and study for my class. If I didn't need this for my class I would have asked for a new one. Other than the typeset problems the book is great. Please email me @ bobbystrunk@live.com if you can help get a better copy.

Big on Potential, Short on Proof

Simply put, the book offers a solid and unique system that offers tremendous possibilities, but also has some drawbacks that limit the type of trader that would use and trade the method.

The method is based on swing trading. Using specific indicators, you basically wait for the indis to line up, and you take a position. The author also offers a "trading plan", on how to achieve great targeted trading results, but does not offer part performance stats as proof the method can work.

Further, one would need to trade extremely small lots or huge leverage with the plan, as US residents are limited to 50:1, the plan cannot work on the MT4 platform- I tried it.

Finally, there are quite a few assumptions the author makes about the traders that trade his method. Some are:
1. The trader knows the correct order type and entry point.
2. The trader knows when to get out.

This method has great potential to work, and if the right trader uses it, it WILL work, but you will need to either add some alert indicators, to signal the perfect setup, or be able to sit in front of the screen and wait. Also, you will need to modify the trading plan to fit the US rules and regs.

What would make this book great?

1. Historical trades.
2. Specific entry and exit information.
3. A solid step by step plan.

I recognize the cost of the book is low, and that many are not willing to invest the best time and effort, but if you are going to publish a method, make sure that it leaves no questions for the reader. That will go a long way for repeat sales and trust. After all, $1 is still $1 and represents a portion of the readers life that cannot be recouped, and suggests a measure of trust and expectation.
