Creepy and compelling

As the previous review states, Avatar really lets Warren Ellis cut like nothing Marvel or DC have ever let him before, and Atmospherics is proof of that. A very short graphic novel, Atmospherics deals with a woman claiming to be the lone survivor of a town whose population was massacred by alien beings. So she says, but did she commit these acts herself under the delusion of heroin use? That's the main question as Ellis' interrogation unfolds, and leads to bigger and better things as well. Everything you'd come to expect about Ellis' style is here: his penchant for paranoid feelings, poppy dialogue, and science fact and fiction are all used very nicely here. Ken Meyer provides stark black and white artwork as well, which suits the dark and dreary tone of the book. Ellis also provides an afterword, which finds the author offering a scathing discussion on alien blamed cow mutilations and Communion author Whitley Striber. The only real downside to Atmospherics is that it's over too soon, but the book is still worth picking up for Ellis fans regardless.

Nice to read some early Ellis

While not the most amazing of his body of work. This short book by Warren Ellis was very interesting to read. A lot of recurring themes that he continues to use are present here (paranoia, drug use, disorientation, etc). The art is ok. The quality of the book is good. Avatar usually does a pretty nice job with there stuff. Often times their books are extremely tasteless and not for those without a very dark sense of humor. I happen to have one, so it suits me fine.

All in all, if you are a Warren Ellis fan, you really should buy this book. Besides, it is extremely cheap.

If you want to check out other Ellis books from Avatar, look for SCARS and the Strange Kisses series. Dark Blue was pretty cool too. He is currently working on Black Gas and Wolfskin which are not yet on Amazon. All is Avatar work is very raw and violent and I found them to be good, fast and funny reads. He seems to just cut loose on his Avatar work. There doesn't seem to be a lot of editing happening to make him focus or refine his thoughts. I like this because it offers a different view into his brain.

JAMES C. ABEGGLEN is Chairman of Asia Advisory Services and a Director of Learning Technologies, the Nippon Fund and Nikkei Science. He serves on the advisory committees of Grove International, Summitomo, Shoji and the American Management Association. A founding partner of the Boston Consulting Group, he established the first international consultancy in Japan for BCG in 1966. He started his own firm in 1984 as he assumed a professorship at Sophia University. Peter H. Zipfel is a graduate of the University Stuttgart, Germany, and the Catholic University of America with a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He founded Modeling and Simulation Technologies, which advises and instructs functional integration of aerospace systems using computer simulations. For 35 years he taught courses in modeling and simulation, guidance and control, and flight dynamics at the University of Florida, and over the span of fifty years he created aerospace simulations of helicopters, missiles, aircraft, and hypersonic vehicles for the German Helicopter Institute, the U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow and an internationally recognized short course instructor.

The Cause Is Still The Same

Mr. Gwynne was the editor of the prominent English newspaper, The Morning Post. Following the First World War, he wrote a series of articles that attacked Jewish subversion of western civilization generally and the British Empire in particular. "The Cause of World Unrest" is the collection of these articles into one volume.It should first be pointed out that Gwynne's thesis was not unique but a product of the times. Winston Churchill and other English statesmen wrote similarly on the "Jewish peril". It appeared to these Englishmen that the German peril had been supplanted by a greater one arising from the chaos of the war. Churchill, in particular, wrote of Jewish Bolsheviks "laying Russia low" and "gripping the terrified Russian people by the hair of their head".

Gwynne covers many bases in his wide-ranging attacks but seems particularly concerned with the nefarious activities of the Jews at the Paris Peace Conference. He regarded the Jewish efforts at "minorities treaties" as virtual proof that Jews were an international nation wherever they lived, loyal to themselves first and loyal to the nation where they resided secondarily, if at all. He shared the common English perception that the Bolshevik takeover in Russia was Jewish, a thesis that did, indeed, have considerable factual support. The activities of Gwynne and others were not without effect. Said activities provoked the famous "Letter of the Ten", in which extremely prominent English Jews, including Lord Swaythling, Moses Montefiore and others, confessed that the accusations of subversive activities by the Jews in London's east side were largely true and specifically disavowing their activities.

"The Cause of World Unrest" is prototypical thinking of its kind. It is similar, in many respects, to American productions of the same time, like "The Power and Aims of International Jewry" by the American State Department produced in the year 1919. These kind of theses are now regarded with disfavor. Whether that is because their arguments have been rebutted or because Jewish economic and political power is now so enormous that it cannot effectively be challenged is for the reader to decide.

Difficult format...

I just got this and want to alert folks about the format. It is simply a xerox copy of each page of the book which is bearable but the print size is tiny and my kindle can not increase the print size.I will try to read it and perhaps revise my review.

The Book is Awful

I would have liked to have said just one good thing...oh, I have it: huge letters. If you are illiterate and completely blind; this is the book for you. Indeed. Otherwise, it is not recommend; at all. I read the whole thing in a day. I kept turning the pages hoping for something. It never occurred. You will not learn one damned thing. It's an anti-masonic; anti-illuminati book that will drive you to complete madness. If you have studied either; you know more than the author. Seems like I recall this book being written around 1920. I've got news for you; it was a bad book then. It places all England and France's problems squarely upon the freemasons. And, quite frankly, does a poor job at it.

chock full of information but dry

This book is full of lots of technical information regarding biomechanics. Some sections are quite dry and there are not a lot of clinical examples. The book would be great for those interested into the physics behind biomechanics.

This book covers most aspects relating to ortopaedic biomechanics. It is a most useful reference to all orthopaedic surgeon and biomechanical researchers. I have no doubt that this book should be in the library of every professions allied to orthopaedic surgery and biomechanics.

A non-BS fitness book you can actually apply to your life - excellent read

I'm often skeptical of fitness books as they often either give you hollow inspirational sayings or impractical advice on how in order to get 6 pack abs you just need to work out 8 hours a day. What I love about this book is the author creates a framework and mindset that is rooted in reality and actually implementable to your own life. The focus of the book is on how to maintain your fitness (and as a result - make yourself more productive) under the stresses and time constraints of being an entrepreneur. While the book focuses on entrepreneurs, I think the tactics in the book can apply much broader than that to anyone who has ever said "I know I should be more fit, but I don't have the time" which is something I would say constantly. By developing the proper mindset to start you create the circumstance where you will naturally make the choices that push you where you want to go - highly recommended read

Fischer (History and American Studies/Univ. of Minn., Duluth) offers nine essays on various aspects of the history of American political cartooning. Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist Jeff MacNelly once noted that if they couldn't draw, most political cartoonists would probably have become hired assassins. It's a quote so witty and on the money that Fischer repeats it three times. As he observes, political cartoonists tend to be sharp-tongued as well as sharp- witted iconoclasts, and although their power has diminished in this century, they still attract unwanted attention to greasy politicians; after all, Paul Conrad made Nixon's ``enemies list.'' Of course, in the previous century, before TV, radio, and the wire services, the potency of the cartoon image was greater. In the first and most interesting essay in this volume, Fischer revisits the war between Thomas Nast and his nemesis, William ``Boss'' Tweed, but what the author finds is a far cry from the legend. Tweed, he argues, wasn't the great crook of popular belief, nor did he meet his demise at the hands of the cartoonist. However, he readily allows, ``it was Nast who elevated graphic assassination to an art.'' Fischer traces the elevation of Populist William Peffer, a rare third-party success who served in the US Senate, into a demonic figure by cartoonists who distorted his record mercilessly; the use of ``filler'' cartoons in 19th-century magazines that indulged in scurrilous racial and ethnic stereotyping; and the treatment of the Statue of Liberty and Lincoln as iconic figures. The result is an uneven collection, always informative, intermittently entertaining, but too often a seemingly endless catalog of ideas and representations. Good book

I love political cartoons, especially ones from the 1800s. I enjoyed the ones here very much, although I wished the some were full page (like others) so you can read the little stuff in a Nast cartoon. There's a little too much chatter (for me) about the times of the country when the cartoon was done, as opposed to just a caption explaining it. And a few more cartoons. It's just my preferences, however, and this is really good book, very broad ranged and well presented. The book came at the correct time and in VG condition, so opinion of the seller is very positive. (I'm not sure if this review is JUST for the book or both)

About the Author

First four years after Hicrat

This Volume covers the first four years after the Hicrat. Among various excurcios to neighbouring tribes or caravans the volume covers Badr and Uhud battles. Marriage of Mohammed (AS) to HZ. Aisah, conflicts with Jews in the city of Madina. Tabari uses Ibn Ishak, Ibn Hisham as his sources and time to time provides variant stories on same subject with chain of isnads. Contrary to his Tafsir, he does not say which one is more acceptable to him. The translators have some preface and time to time expalanatory commentary in Fine Prints which I found most of them unacceptable. I did not appreciate sometimes their twisted opinions in a book which is supposed to be a translation. But again I appreciate their work for making this book available to English readers.

Magnificent Opus by an Early Islamic Historian

Tabari's opus is magnificent indeed. His Taarikh (History of Prophets and Kings) is a great peace of early islamic historiography, earliest with the exception of Ibn Ishaq's Sira. SUNY did great job translating this 40-volume into English. The reder will find out how early Islam developed according to its official narrative, and how it conquered neighboring lands. I would suggest to the reader to also check historiographical works on early Islam by Hoyland, Crone, Cook, Ibn Warraq and particularly by B. Lewis and M. Sharon, which provide more context for Tabari's History and discuss historicity - or lack thereof - of its narrative.
