About the Author
Souad T. Ali is Associate Professor at Arizona State University. She co-founded Al-Sudan Center for Democracy, Peace, and Civil Rights, and co-chaired the committee for peace in Sudan. A Fulbright Scholar, she is the author of A Religion, Not a State: Ali 'Abd al-Raziq Islamic Justification of Political Secularism (2009) and numerous articles. She is Director of Arabic and Chair of the Council for Arabic and Islamic Studies at ASU, and has been a Board member of the Sudan Studies Association, Head of Classics and Middle Eastern Studies at ASU, and President of the American Academy of Religion/Western Region. An advocate of women's rights, she was born in Sudan and lived in England.Stephanie Beswick was born in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, and spent her early years at Goda on the White Nile and at Bunziger on the Blue Nile. She received her education in Great Britain and the United States, earning her doctorate at Michigan State University. She has written a monograph on South Sudan, Sudan's Blood Memory, a pre-colonial history of the Dinka community. She has co-edited numerous books on Sudan, and has written approximately 30 journal articles. She is a past president of the Sudan Studies Association and a member of the Advisory Council for the Association.Richard Lobban received his PhD from Northwestern University, and is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and former Chair at Rhode Island College. He has written scores of articles, reviews, chapters and several editions of the Historical Dictionary of Sudan, and co-edited Sudan's Wars and Peace Agreements; Sudan Security; and The Historical Dictionary of Ancient and Medieval Nubia. His latest co-authored book is Libya: History and Revolution.Jay Spaulding was originally a medievalist by training, and earned a doctorate in African History from Columbia University. He has taught at Kean University, with several visiting professorships at Michigan State University. He is a founding member of the Sudan Studies Association. His publications include The Heroic Age in Sinnar and several co-edited volumes, as well as numerous shorter studies in the field of northeast African history.

About the Author
The Late MURRAY R. SPIEGEl received the M.S degree in Physics and the Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large Companies. His last Position was professor and Chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics at the Rensselaer polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

Not for Engineers

This books looks like it was written by a mathematician for math students. I'm not saying that's bad, but with the screaming title, I feel like it will attract a lot of engineering students looking for help in their lower division engineering classes where Laplace Transforms are an integral part of the course. This text is not your best choice.
Looking @ the titles of some of the 8 chap. should make you suspicious:
Chap. 2 - The Inverse Laplace Transform,
Chap. 3 - Applications to Differential Equations,
Chap. 4 - Applications to Integral & Difference Equations,
Chap. 5 - Complex Variable Theory,
Chap. 7 - The Complex Inversion Formula,
Chap. 8 - Application to Boundary-Value Problems.
It's my guess that if your're an undergraduate engineering student (particularly EE), you're looking for a little less of Lerch's & Green's theorems, complex variable theory, & working inverse Laplace transforms by hand, and instead more engineering explanations of the complex S-plain, what's really happening when an f(t) is transposed into an F(s), how does the little function "e" raised to the "-st" power perform its magic, how does Laplace & Fourier transform differ, how does this relate to Phasors, & how can I solve many engineering problems without having to even write differential equations? In other words, you probably don't need another terse, yet cold math book. What you may be looking for is something that addresses S-Domain circuit/system analysis written from the engineering point of view.
One suggestion, staying with Schaum's, is SIGNALS and SYSTEMS where Hsu does an OK job with engineering transforms including Laplace. It's more systems oriented than circuits, but you'll get a better feel for the application of transforms to engineering problems & the engineering math behind them from this book.

Read Simenon in French!

As an adult learner of the French language, it can be challenging to find engaging books that are also easy to read. I like mysteries and Georges Simenon's books are very good in English - but I want to read them in French! Charles Milou does an excellent job of transcribing this story into an easier format that a French B1/B2 level can understand.

eye opener for closed ears

The book gave me something to think about. I never thought about the limitations imposed on deaf kids by the very system that is supposedly educating and preparing them for their future. A future the education department believe and perpetuate as limited and separate from the hearing world. This principle can be viewed in many different areas where there is a deviation from the masses. Whatever the masses may be.

Just finished this fascinating read!

I finished the book today! From the beginning I was very curious about how it will end, and I could not wait to read more to find out what will happen next--Valente is a great story teller (and scholar).

The book is filled with very interesting and thought provoking stories that only Valente's life experience can offer. I am glad that he is sharing his story and unique perspective with readers.

Reading it is uplifting and I greatly recommend it to all parents and educators of deaf children but also to all who want to better understand the human experience of deafness, hardness to live in a world of hearing, wealth of sign language ...
A book that should be translated in all languages!"

Robert R. Leichtman, M.D. developed the techniques of Active Meditation more than 30 years ago, and has been teaching, lecturing, and writing on this and other topics throughout the world since. He lives in Baltimore where he is a senior memberof the healing team at the world-famous New Life Clinic.

To Each His (or Her) Own

I read the only review of this book and was "inspired" to give my view. I liked this book. It gave me things to think about as I went through the day. I am not an idiot. I do not believe there needs to be an exacting formula to do "it" well or correctly. It is more than relaxation, which this book explains very well. It gave me a way to understand meditation and how to integrate the ideas of the practice in our society. This is why it is called "Active Meditation". I have other books also that are not so "Western friendly". It is certainly good for another look at things. Take it out of the library for a test. I have a feeling that if I talked to the other interviewer about this, there would be quite a backlash! Ironic. I keep this one around for reference. Their sense of humor makes the topic less intense than others. But this is not a wishy washy book. Helped me. In any case, I would say to each his or her own.

Extraordinary

Behind a rather dull looking cover is an extraordinary book. It really has little to do with meditation as we think of it with the breathing exercises and such, but it tries to go beyond these techniques to awaken us to something far richer. The authors are very honest about what it takes to grow in awareness. These ideas will not appeal to those who desire immediate spiritual experiences and change. However, with proper motivation, discipline and patience, one can discover real change as the integration of the personality and God, through the higher self, begins to unfold. This book is not perfect, but it can serve as a very important launching point to those serious about increasing their awareness level in life and are not just after a quick feel-good spiritual experience.

One of the best books on meditation

I picked up a copy of Active Meditation about six years ago, thinking it would be a good way to "relax". Instead I found out what meditation is really for - contacting and integrating the "Life of Spirit" into our lives. Since then I have read many other books and essays by the authors. They are among the best works available on these topics. One reviewer gave it a poor rating and claimed that the authors "can't handle mainstream religion". In fact, the authors have transcended mainstream religion. The views they provide are no different from those of great mystics such as Saint Teresa of Avila. They clearly point out the best principles that all religions are based on - but do not hesitate to point out the narrow-minded interpretations, distortions or faulty logic. That same reviewer also implied that these ideas were based on "unvalidated claims and assumptions". They may have been "unvalidated" by him, but in fact all the claims in Active Meditation can be validated. But we must develop "the eyes to see" and try these ideas ourselves. Highly recommended!

The best hypnosis book I have every read.

Fun With Hypnosis: The Complete How-To Guide by Svengali is, by far, the best book on hypnosis I have ever read.
It slowly shows the reader the history of hypnosis. It explains how it is used worldwide in the medical community. It then goes through testing; to relax the subject and to test if he/she responds to your commands.
After testing, he tells you how to induct a trance, deepen the trance, mulpitle routines you can do, all with great detail and with word for word scripts that get results. After those chapters, hedives into stage hypnotism and odds and ends, followed by a helpful self help section on self hypnosis for eliminationg and starting habits; for example stop smoking, dieting, and good study habits.

Very easily read book on the subject. Author gets right to the point and makes the point understandable. There is absolutely nothing missed in this volume. Plenty of technique, lots of routines, nothing left to the imagination.

Fun? Well...perfect your skills first

Just like any how to book, this one also has its conditions. Yes you can hypnotise someone, no doubt, but hypnotism is not as easy as ONE, TWO, THREE. Like any type of skill it needs to be practiced, practiced and practiced. Don't expect to read the book and go out and hypnotise someone, it really doesn't work like that and anyone that tells you any different is a fool. Don't believe me? Just ask a licensed hypnotherapist.

A MUST read!

This book was amazing. I love the fact that it is broken up to be a poem to one page.
I indulged in this book all in one sitting. The words were just art, page after page and I was captivated. I have read it cover to cover twice and loved it both times. The struggle in this book really made me teary eyed and I did cry. The love, loss and chance in this book are beautifully written.
As a writer myself, I truly enjoyed this.

This book of poems was simply amazing. It was a short read but it was a nice collection. It won't be collecting dust and forgotten by me. It flowed very nicely. It was easy to feel the emotions. I find it hard to relate to poems most of the time, but this collection will speak to anyone's soul. I am glad that I purchased it and can't wait to read more from the author!

A nit's best eye opener

I've wanted this book since its release but never got round to adding it to my poker library, so when I saw it available on Amazon for less than $50 I decided to buy it. Having previously read (and thoroughly enjoyed) The Poker Blueprint, I was expecting high quality content in this book and was not let down. Tri's writing style is clear, concise and made some of the trickier concepts easier to digest. I love that the NL Workbook contains theory as well as plenty of examples to put said theory in practice - which in my opinion is what makes a "good poker book" a "great poker book".

A little background information about my game:
I play SSNL 6 max online (super nit style) and as a result regularly find myself in spots against some of the better regulars where I tend to get confused/uncomfortable/a big brainfreeze, which resulted in me either hero calling without giving much consideration to their ranges, or being too weak tight in spots where an aggresive line should have been taken. A classic example is being afraid to play the optimal way "because I have been called/raised before in a similar situation" (most likely because I either bet or raised in the wrong spot/vs the wrong opponent)

After reading the book initially I spewed a little because I wasn't applying the concepts correctly. However as I read it a few more times, I gradually began to discover where I should be applying selective aggression, and where I should strongly consider folding (even though my instant reaction may have been to snap call).

My game is far from what I would call great, as I still make mistakes and get confused, but those situations seem to appear less often now I'm slowly moving away from the "I play my 2 cards" robotic button clicking approach, and am instead thinking more about the opponent's range as well as what they're likely to do with it. Now when I make a play, I ask myself why in my head and only go ahead if there's good reason to do so.

Having said the above, if you're not willing to put in the work, no book will make you a winning player. But if you dedicate some time to improving your game armed with the information in this book, you will get there eventually.

too hard to read on kindle

The NL workbook was offered as a kindle download; but it was too hard to read. the images of the card holdings could not be enlarged. I haven't tried using a magnifying glass, but in any case, I am disappointed that the fact that no one took the time to notice or resolve this. And, I will have to be cautious with future downloads of other books I intend to read on my kindle.

The tables are getting tougher...

Review for Daily Variance's Exploiting Regulars... Put it in your tank.

If you want greater insight into the modern view of poker, with a few gem-insights along the way, buy a book like this. Books like these will elevate you from "dangerous" to "fearless." You will be more able to make the correct play and be less concerned about how the cards may fall.

I play NLHE at a wide variety of levels (200NL-5000NL) both online and in live executive games that run very, very deep (300-500BBs). I regularly battle against 18-table rake-backing TAGs (many who have 2-3 million hands under their belts; but they still have huge holes in their games that this book illuminates), wealthy maniacs, live fish, as well as bracelet-winning "stars" and "red" pros looking to take out some well-healed execs over a bottle of scotch. I am often not the best or most experienced player at the table, but I usually find a way to survive. Well, I do better when I am folding every now and then ... As much varied poker experiences as I have, however, I am always looking for guidance in "putting it all together." And that is why I come to Daily Variance's publications; they put it together for me. They synthesize and organize what I already know and tell me things that I don't know or don't fully appreciate. I am a member of several coaching sites, I have read many of the e-books out there, and, each time Daily Variance puts out a new book, I still love having these at my bedside table... Tri's books always find a way of presenting absurdly common situations that I discover that I am yet to fully tank on.

If you have not mastered manipulating hand ranges and hand combinatorics, then these books are a must read. If you are good with such things, these books are still worthwhile, since they are insight into how another player/coach thinks about the game and they offer loads of hands to think through with the author (who will think about the hands in a way far more advanced than the "classic" poker books do).

Many people on the forums have questioned the value of paying hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for a poker book. But, I'd be willing to bet that you make at least one very large poker decision better next time you play if you study these books. One large pot won instead of lost means that even a $1K book starts paying for itself. I won a $2k+ pot that I would have otherwise lost if it weren't for having just read one of Tri's books...
