I chose this rating for one simple reason: The frequencies are COMPLETELY out of date; and several new commuter rail "agencies" and light rail operations have surfaced. Mr, Sturm; if you are still alive, PLEASE, update this book! Two examples of new commuter projects in my local area (D/FW) are the Trinity Rail Express (TRE), and the light rail/city bus "agency" called Dallas Area Rapid Transit (or DART for short.) Now I will admit that some of your information MAY still be accurate; and that the TRE is actually run as a joint venture between DART and the Fort Worth Public Transportation System; (or, as it's more commonly known, the T) but all the same; their addition is needed!

I bought this to listen to train crews. It has been helpful but I wish it had a guide to how and when rail workers use the radio. I know this would change from railroad company to company, but it would be helpful. It is a good frequency guide.

Good stories for those interested in western history.

I remember my dad had this book on the back of the toilet for years in the 80's. It took him a long time to make headway with that being his only chance to read. And it is a long book. It definitely held my attention throughout. Caveats to that - I am very interested in the history of the West, being a native to Southern California. The story telling makes the history come alive, to be sure. I used Amazon's whisper synch and jumped back and forth between listening while walking the dog and driving and reading when I could. The whisper synch is a little buggy, but I do love it and wish Amazon would offer more titles with that nifty feature. The actor in the reading on Audible was appropriately low key - almost like a professor reading a history test. At first that concerned me, but it worked well for this book. It wasn't distracting as some over-actors on Audible can be. If you are interested in Western history, this is a fun read and I would recommend it. Unless you are a power reader, plan on it taking some time. I lost track of the lineage of all the characters after a while since it is so long and my reading cycles are limited. But I'm not sure how you could cover such a vast subject with good engagement and story lines better. And that said - I am just assuming the stories are relatively true to the times they represent - I'm not enough of a history buff to do fact checking.

James Michener is hands down the best author of all time. His books often start a little slow but this section is always chock full of fascinating information. When he gets into the story it is always steady and often has fast paced sections. I find his books to be impossible to put down. His characters are always fully developed and one feels like you know them. Scenes are always fully set and bring the most amazing pictures to mind. Ticking boxes to describe his books really does not work for me. I did it but probably not well as his books are so much better than just about any others you can name. This one, Caravans, Hawaii, and Alaska are some that are so wonderful they make you feel as if you had lived them. You cannot go wrong choosing anything Mr. Michener has written.

About the Author
Tim Ernst is Arkansas' Wilderness Photographer. He has been hiking, driving and crawling around the wonderful Ozark Mountains for most of his life, preserving the images he sees on film for everyone to enjoy. His photographs have appeared in hundreds of national, regional and local publications. Some of his credits include National Geographic, Audubon, Backpacker, Outside, Outdoor Photographer, American Hiker, Natural History, Country, Chevy Outdoors, and Arkansas Times magazines, Sierra Club and Hallmark calendars, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service maps and brochures, Readers Digest Books, and The New York Times. Sweet Arkansas hiking...

Very detailed. Sometimes a little too much rambling but definitely a great book to have. It was really beneficial to read ahead a time to help plan length of hikes each day, especially when starting in Oklahoma side since the trail is not as well marked on that end. I then took just the portion I needed for my 82 mile hike that I did this past summer. Looking forward to doing another section this upcoming year and will definitely be using this book over and over.

For instance, without a light to read his compass at night how did Carlos know where he had to go? How much food did he consume? In those almost 4 days of crawling how did he manage his bathroom? How did he sleep for two nights with enemy patrols around him? How did he handle his encounter with a poisonous viper?

How could he stand the army of ants that took up lodging in his clothes? But most important of all is how Hathcock fought to control the pain and stress and open blisters he suffered on his shoulder, hip and arm from such a prolonged abrasive slow motion crawl? And how could he have made that one shot, one kill that had to be dead-center in the small target that was not just the length of one football field away but it was the length of seven football fields away! How could he possibly make a shot like that? And finally after being cramped up, eaten up, and bruised up…how did he then so quickly avoid capture?

Mission Impossible? Not for Carlos Hathcock!

The author and I share a deep respect for Carlos Hathcock. As a Marine Sniper during the Vietnam war he was the "Go To" man for the most incredible missions involving the use of a sniper rifle. His stories are legends in the Marine Corp and in the Riflemans' World as well.

He was unusual in that he carried out most of his missions alone..until the Corp made having a "spotter" with the sniper to verify the and record the kill shot. Their is still doubts about how this rule came in to play. Some believe that competitive snipers (Army) simply did not believe Hathcock's growing number of kills. The addition of a "spotter" also served as a safety measure while the sniper was focused on the target, the spotter would be able to maintain awareness of the surroundings.

Hathcock was terribly injured while hitching a ride on a n armored vehicle when it ran over a mine and caught fire. He received burns over most of his body while attempting to rescue other occupants of the vehicle. He underwent many months of treatment and long periods of therapy and was not fully recovered when he entered the 1000 yard marksmanship challenge. His scar tissue broke open from the sling while he was in the prone position but he just kept competing ignoring the pain. His clothing was soaked with blood when he finished his round.

He was known as "White Feather" his trademark which made him a wanted man with a bounty on his head by the NVA and VC.

The epilogue told by a Marine who wanted some advice on how to zero his scope was very interesting. A lengthy, time consuming process but once it was completed he would have a rifle that was accurate at any given yardage, under a number of weather conditions assuming the triggerman was calm and collected. One wonders where Carlos learned the method? Trial and error or from an expert?

Carlos Hathcock retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after 23 years in the Marine Corp. Many books have been written about him and about Snipers in general. Hathcock ,in my opinion,changed the thinking from "Sniping is an act of murder" to "Sniping is necessary to counter enemy sniper attacks, instill fear and disorganization in enemy groups, and eliminate key leadership in enemy ranks. "

He proved this principle in his mission to kill the NVA general.

What an amazing man, you can train a shooter

What an amazing man, you can train a shooter, but Carlos had the dedication and bravery to complete operation which everyone else said was suicide and yet he would volunteer for those missions. Any soldier who goes into sniper training no matter what branch of the service, learns technics taught my GySgt Carlos Hathcock.. To this day, snipers are still trying to match imposable shots he was able to complete. This is the true story of an American hero..

Human Behavior and the Social Environment- Individuals and Families

Following on from the first book which had considered the biopsychosocial components of human behaviour from a macro perspective this volume continues with an investigation of the micro components of why humans do the things that we do. The volume is primarily concerned with the idea of resiliance across the lifespan and which is explored throught the lens of an interdisciplinary perspective. Through this detailed and nuanced perspective the complex issues that arise are embraced rather than avoided, and the need to work with paradox is embraced. The implications for practice in social work through highlighting the importance of a whole systems approach is addressed and along with its companion volume this is essential reading for students, practitioners and policy makers in the area of social work and behavioural sciences.
